Reaffirming its resolve to build a Drug-Free Tamil Nadu, the State Government has unveiled a comprehensive, multi-dimensional strategy that integrates aggressive law enforcement, intelligence-driven policing, asset confiscation, institutional strengthening and mass public awareness to eliminate narcotics trafficking and curb substance abuse.
The campaign has already yielded significant results, with enforcement agencies recording historic seizures and arrests during the first half of 2026, underscoring the State’s zero-tolerance approach towards narcotics and banned tobacco products.
Massive Statewide Enforcement Drive
Building on the success of a three-day State-wide Special Enforcement Drive conducted from July 3 to 5, the Government has launched an intensive month-long anti-drug operation from July 8 to August 8, 2026, aimed at further tightening surveillance and disrupting drug supply chains.
The intensified campaign has already produced impressive results during July:
- 1,020 NDPS cases detected
- 1,270 persons arrested
- 1,034 kg of ganja seized
- 4.5 kg of other narcotic substances recovered
- 4,579 narcotic tablets confiscated
Drug Hotspots and Railway Routes Under Scanner
Recognising the importance of intercepting narcotics before they reach consumers, Tamil Nadu Police have placed more than 3,950 identified drug hotspots under continuous surveillance.
Authorities have also verified 2,850 suspected drug operatives as part of targeted intelligence operations.
Special attention is being paid to railway trafficking routes, with six major trains originating from eastern and north-eastern India kept under strict surveillance to intercept ganja smuggled from the Andhra-Odisha Border (AOB), West Bengal, Assam, Bihar and Tripura.
Investigating officers have also been directed to systematically identify and prosecute the entire narcotics ecosystem, including suppliers, receivers, financiers and organised trafficking syndicates.
Financial Strike Against Drug Syndicates
In a major shift towards dismantling the economics of organised crime, the Government has intensified efforts to freeze bank accounts and confiscate properties acquired through drug trafficking.
The objective is to weaken criminal syndicates by targeting their financial infrastructure rather than merely arresting individual offenders.
As a preventive measure, 472 habitual drug offenders have been detained under the Goondas Act during the current year.
Meanwhile, successful prosecution has resulted in convictions in 1,420 NDPS cases, reflecting sustained efforts to strengthen criminal justice outcomes.
War Against Banned Tobacco Products
The anti-drug campaign has also expanded its focus to banned tobacco products.
Police, Food Safety officials and Local Body authorities have jointly seized nearly 1.6 lakh kilograms of prohibited tobacco products across Tamil Nadu during the current year.
The enforcement drive has led to:
- 9,450 registered cases
- ₹5.85 crore in penalties imposed
- 2,453 commercial establishments sealed
Building Permanent Anti-Narcotics Infrastructure
To institutionalise the fight against narcotics, the Government has announced the establishment of dedicated Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) Police Stations in every district and city police commissionerate.
These specialised units will function as frontline intelligence centres responsible for:
- Intelligence gathering and analysis
- Border interdiction
- Investigation of organised trafficking syndicates
- Financial tracking of drug networks
To ensure coordinated action across departments, regular Narco Coordination (NCORD) meetings are being conducted at both the State and district levels, bringing together officials from the Police, Health, School Education, Higher Education, Food Safety and Drug Control departments.
Protecting Youth Through Awareness
Recognising that prevention remains the strongest weapon against addiction, Tamil Nadu has established nearly 17,000 Anti-Drug Clubs in schools and colleges across the State.
These clubs aim to educate students about the devastating social, physical and psychological consequences of drug abuse while encouraging peer-led awareness and responsible citizenship.
The Government reiterated its unwavering commitment to eliminating narcotic drugs and banned tobacco products through sustained intelligence-based enforcement, inter-departmental coordination and community participation.
Public Participation Key to Success
The Government has appealed to citizens to actively participate in the fight against narcotics by reporting any information relating to the illegal sale, possession, transportation or trafficking of drugs and banned tobacco products through:
- Drug Free TN Mobile App
- Toll-Free Helpline: 10581
- WhatsApp: 94984 10581
Officials emphasised that every credible tip-off could help save lives, dismantle trafficking networks and strengthen the collective mission of making Tamil Nadu a safer, healthier and drug-free society.
