What makes a great cardiologist—mastery over the heart, or the ability to understand the person behind it? The answer lies in bringing both together, Dr Ashwin B. Mehta, Director of Cardiology, Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre, Mumbai, emphasised while urging the next generation of cardiologists to combine professional excellence with compassion.

Dr Mehta delivered the Dr S. Thanikachalam Endowment Oration in Cardiac Sciences at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER), Chennai, using the occasion to underline the human dimension of modern cardiac care.

  • Patient-centred medicine and empathy highlighted as essential to the future of cardiovascular care

Addressing the gathering, Dr Mehta advised young cardiologists to build their careers with competence, courage and confidence, while carrying compassion throughout their professional journey.

He stressed that technical and clinical expertise must go hand in hand with empathy and a patient-centred approach, particularly in a specialty where patients and families often confront fear, uncertainty and life-changing decisions.

The oration thus became more than an academic engagement, highlighting a message increasingly central to healthcare: the finest medical knowledge becomes truly meaningful when it is delivered with humanity.

The programme brought together senior medical professionals and academic leaders, providing an opportunity to reflect on the evolving responsibilities of specialists in cardiac sciences and the values that should guide the next generation of healthcare professionals.

The event also featured the presentation of a citation to Dr Mehta by Dr Sudhagar Singh, Medical Director, SRIHER.

Also present were Dr S. Ramesh, HoD, Cardiology; Dr S. Senthil Kumar, Registrar; and Dr S. Nagendra Boopathy, Professor, Cardiology, SRIHER.
