CHENNAI, DECEMBER 3
Majority of the water bodies serving main source for the drinking water supply to Chennai and in the neighbouring Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu and Tiruvallore districts are filling up fast because of the rain that occurred for the past few days. The rains also helped increasing the ground water table marginally.
Official sources said that many lakes in the neighbouring newly carved out Chengalpattu and Kanchipuram district have reached their fully capacity, while some of them are overflowing. Over 500 water bodies out of the 924 water bodies filled up and it is expected that the remaining water bodies will fill up on Wednesday. The storage of the water bodies would be sufficient for irrigation, the officials said.
Due to heavy downpour over the weekend has also led to a rise in ground water table by 1metre to 2 metres across Chennai during November. According to Metrowater, areas such as Adyar, Sholinganallur and Alandur have witnessed a better rise in water level compared to other areas.
