Gujarat reported 510 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, taking the tally to 21,554, while 34 more patients succumbed to the infection, 26 of them in Ahmedabad alone, the state health department said.

With the death of 34 more patients, the toll in the state rose to 1,347, it said here.
At the same time, 370 patients recovered, taking the number of people discharged so far from hospitals to 14,743, the department said.

The state now has 5,464 active cases, of which the condition of 69 patients is critical, the department said.
Ahmedabad reported 343 of the 510 new cases in the state and 26 of the 34 deaths.

With this, the case count in Ahmedabad district, the worst-hit by the pandemic in Gujarat, has gone up to 15,305, and the death toll to 1,092.
The district also reported the highest number of recovery of patients on Wednesday at 266, followed by Surat at 53, Vadodara 14, and Gandhinagar 12.

Katargam area of Surat reports more cases
Surat reported 73 new cases, raising the tally in the district to 2,281. In Vadodara, the case count rose to 1,395 with the addition of 26 new infections.
The Surat Municipal Corporation on Wednesday said several new COVID-19 cases were of workers engaged at diamond polishing units and power looms that were allowed to resume operation recently. Many of these units are located in the Katargam locality of Surat.

The civic body has asked these units to take special precautions as workers sit in close proximity, increasing chances of infection.
Among 18 other districts that reported new cases on Wednesday, Bhavnagar recorded eight, Kheda six, Rajkot, and Mehsana five each, among others.

The health department said it has so far tested 2,66,404 samples for COVID-19 in the state.

Ahmedabad crosses 15,000-mark with 343 new cases
The coronavirus count in Ahmedabad rose to 15,305 after 343 new cases were reported on Wednesday, while 26 more patients succumbed to the infection, the state health department said.

With the death of 26 more patients, the toll in the district, the worst-hit by COVID-19 in Gujarat, increased to 1,092, it said.
A total of 266 patients were discharged from hospitals in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, the department said.
Ahmedabad reported 343 out of the total 510 COVID-19 cases recorded in the state on Wednesday, and 26 of the 34 fatalities.
According to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, there are 3,049 active cases in the city, which is 21 per cent of the total 14,527 COVID-19 cases recorded till Wednesday afternoon in civic limits.
Around 72 percent of total patients have recovered, while the death rate is 7.2 per cent, it said.
The city’s north zone remains the worst affected with 783, or 25.7 percent, of the total active cases reported from there, followed by the west zone with 557, or 18.3 per cent, of the active cases.
“Super spreaders” account for 16.3 percent of active cases in Ahmedabad city at 497, the AMC said.
Rural Ahmedabad reported 22 new cases on Wednesday, taking the total number of COVID-19 infections to 460.
With two more deaths reported from rural parts of the district, the toll has risen to 30.
A total of 277 people, or 60 percent of the patients, have been discharged so far in rural areas, as per Ahmedabad district panchayat data.
Case against patient who allegedly escaped from hospital
A case was registered against a COVID-19 patient, who had allegedly escaped from a facility in Ahmedabad city, and brought back after nearly 24 hours, an official said on Wednesday.
A 30-year-old patient admitted at a COVID-19 care centre at a hospital and gave a slip to the medical staff and managed to escape on Tuesday, sub-inspector Kamlesh Choudhary of a police station in Gujarat said.
“The patient was admitted to the facility on June 3 and escaped on Tuesday evening. A doctor from the centre lodged an FIR against him last night,” the official said.
A medical team brought the escapee back after nearly 24 hours, he added.
An offence has been lodged against the man under the section of Indian Penal Code and section 3 (to disobey order) of the Epidemic Diseases Act, he said.
The COVID-19 care centres are set up to monitor the condition of asymptomatic patients and those who have mild symptoms of the disease.
