Ahmedabad sees 347 COVID-19 cases, 12 deaths; 362 discharged
Ahmedabad recorded 347 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, the highest for any district in Gujarat, taking its tally to 48,000, while 12 people died and 362 people recovered during the day, an official said.
The toll in the district is now 1,993, while the number of people discharged so far stood at 42,693, he added.
Ahmedabad city accounted for 336 of the people discharged and 323 of the new cases reported, while these figures were 26 and 24 respectively for the district’s rural parts.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation said 156 private hospital beds were added for COVID-19 treatment, while COVID care centres, which are meant for patients who do not have isolation facilities at their homes, or for elderly patients who require hospital supervision, got an additional 378 beds.
With the city witnessing a surge in COVID-19 cases over the past few days, several residential societies in the city, from those having 100 residents to one with over 1,500, have been declared micro containment areas, officials said.
The number of such micro containment areas has risen to 203 after the AMC added 45 areas and removed four, they said.
In another move to decrease crowding and contain the recent spike, the AMC on Tuesday restricted entry to city gardens to four hours per day, from 7 am-9 am and 5 pm-7 pm.
Ahmedabad Mayor Bijal Patel announced the cancellation of Kankaria Carnival, an annual event organised around the redeveloped Kankaria lake here, because of the outbreak.
Rural Ahmedabad now has 3,395 cases, with 24 being detected on Tuesday, while 3,308 people, including 26 during the day, have been discharged, leaving it with a recovery rate of 97 percent, officials said.
Surat: Test numbers rise, 286 COVID-19 cases detected
Surat reported 286 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, taking its tally to 40,773, while two people died and 228 people were discharged during the day, an official said.
Surat city accounted for 219 of the new cases and 187 of the people discharged, taking the overall count of the latter to 28,937, giving it a recovery rate of 93.93 percent, the official said.
The rural part of the district reported 67 new cases and 41 recoveries, he added.
“In Surat city limits, 13,952 persons are quarantined, and 499 hospitalised,” he said.
Officials said testing numbers had risen to 17,038 on November 23 from 10,500 on November 20, one of the reasons why the city was reporting a larger number of cases over the past few days.
“Over 1.28 lakh tests were conducted between November 11 and 23, which led to the detection of 2,220 new cases. A total of 1,18,761 rapid antigen tests and 7,670 RT-PCR tests were conducted during this period,” the Surat Municipal Corporation said.
Covaxin shots reach Sola hospital for phase-3 trials, says official
A consignment of Covaxin, one of the COVID-19 vaccine candidates, reached Sola civil hospital here in Gujarat on Tuesday for the phase-III clinical trials, a senior official said.
The Sola civil hospital is one of the 130 centres across the country where the third phase of clinical trials of Covaxin would be conducted, said HG Koshia, Commissioner, Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA).
“Covaxin is being developed indigenously by vaccine maker Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR),” Koshia told reporters.
While authorities at the civil hospital remain tight-lipped, Ahmedabad-West MP Kirit Solanki tweeted a photo of the “Covaxin trial room” at the hospital.
“Corona”s trial vaccine has arrived at Sola Civil. Trial will commence on 1,000 volunteers starting Friday. Sola Civil has formed a team to check the effects of the vaccine. The hospital has also formed one Ethical Committee and a Scientific Committee for supervision of trials,” Solanki tweeted.
