The flowers placed at Chennai’s Victory War Memorial today carried a poignancy far beyond a ceremonial farewell. They marked the final salute of a soldier who had spent nearly four decades serving the Nation—and whose own military journey was now entering its final chapter.

Lt Gen V Sreehari, General Officer Commanding (GOC), Headquarters Dakshin Bharat Area, relinquished command on his superannuation on Monday, bringing to a close an illustrious military career marked by operational service, distinguished leadership and an enduring commitment to strengthening the bond between the Armed Forces and society.

In a deeply symbolic farewell, Lt Gen Sreehari laid a wreath at the Victory War Memorial, Chennai, paying solemn homage to the bravehearts who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the Nation.
For an outgoing General Officer, the wreath was more than a farewell ritual—it was a final expression of gratitude to those whose sacrifice gives meaning to every generation of soldiers who follow.
The fallen heroes, whose names and memory the Memorial preserves, remained an enduring source of courage, sacrifice and devotion to duty throughout his tenure.
From Sainik School to Special Forces
Commissioned into the 16 Sikh Light Infantry in June 1987, Lt Gen Sreehari subsequently volunteered for and joined the elite Parachute Regiment (Special Forces).
Over a career spanning almost four decades, he held a wide spectrum of challenging Command, Staff and Instructional appointments, gaining operational experience across diverse terrains and theatres and shouldering responsibilities at successive levels of military leadership.
His distinguished service was recognised with some of the Indian Army’s notable decorations, including the Shaurya Chakra, Sena Medal and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, among other honours.
Yet, perhaps the most evocative measure of his journey lies in its extraordinary distance—from a young student entering Sainik School Amaravathi Nagar in 1977 to eventually assuming command of the Indian Army’s Dakshin Bharat Area.
That journey embodies the values associated with military service: discipline, perseverance, professional excellence and an abiding commitment to the Nation.
A General who opened the gates wider
If operational excellence defined one dimension of Lt Gen Sreehari’s career, his tenure as GOC Dakshin Bharat Area brought another distinctive emphasis—the belief that the Armed Forces must remain deeply connected with the society they serve.
He placed particular emphasis on civil-military fusion, youth engagement, military heritage, remembrance and public outreach, seeking to create greater opportunities for citizens to understand the Armed Forces beyond the conventional image of uniforms and ceremonies.
The Victory War Memorial became a major focus of this outreach.
Under his leadership, concerted efforts were made to transform the Memorial into a more vibrant centre of remembrance, military heritage and public education.
The installation and display of military artefacts, including the T-55 tank, as well as models of naval assets such as INS Vikrant and INS Anjadip, added a tangible dimension to the public’s engagement with India’s military history.
The objective was clear: to ensure that remembrance did not remain confined to memorial walls, but became a living experience for a new generation.
History speaks in Tamil too
One of the notable initiatives during his tenure was the introduction of specially curated Light and Sound Shows with Tamil subtitles at the Victory War Memorial.
The initiative was designed to make India’s military history, traditions and ethos accessible to a wider section of society, particularly young people.

The show is scheduled to be repeated on Saturday evenings, providing citizens with an engaging opportunity to understand the sacrifices of India’s soldiers and the history behind the Nation’s military traditions.
For schoolchildren, college students and NCC cadets, such initiatives offer something that textbooks alone cannot provide—the opportunity to encounter military history in a setting dedicated to those who lived and died by it.
The outreach extended to veterans, Veer Naris, families of fallen soldiers, tourists and the general public, creating platforms for interaction between citizens, serving personnel and veterans.
Civil-military fusion beyond ceremony
Lt Gen Sreehari’s approach to civil-military relations extended beyond public events and heritage initiatives.
His tenure witnessed sustained efforts to strengthen coordination between the Armed Forces and civilian institutions, particularly in areas requiring collective preparedness.
Engagement with the medical fraternity, government and private hospitals and other civil stakeholders helped strengthen coordination in areas including emergency preparedness, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), pandemic preparedness and mass-casualty response.
Such cooperation assumes particular importance in a country where the Armed Forces are frequently called upon to support civil authorities during natural disasters, emergencies and other crises.
The underlying philosophy was one of preparedness before crisis—not merely cooperation after calamity strikes.
A soldier’s responsibility does not end with retirement
Veteran welfare also remained a significant component of his tenure.
Efforts towards resettlement, skilling, employment and self-employment sought to create greater opportunities for veterans, Veer Naris and dependants as they transitioned into the next phase of their lives.
It reinforced an enduring military principle: service may have a retirement date, but the institution’s responsibility towards its veterans does not.
The Officers, JCOs, Other Ranks and Civil Staff of Headquarters Dakshin Bharat Area expressed their gratitude to Lt Gen Sreehari for his visionary leadership, professional guidance and personal commitment to strengthening the relationship between the Armed Forces and society.
His tenure is expected to be remembered particularly for the renewed impetus given to public outreach, remembrance of fallen heroes, military heritage and civil-military fusion across the Dakshin Bharat Area.
The final wreath—and a new chapter
And so, on Monday, the soldier who had spent decades leading from the front stood before the Memorial one final time as GOC and placed a wreath before the Nation’s fallen.
There could scarcely have been a more fitting farewell.
The command has been relinquished. The uniformed chapter has closed. But the legacy of a soldier who sought to connect the Nation’s military heritage with its people remains.
As Lt Gen Sreehari proceeds into superannuation, the Dakshin Bharat Area family has extended its best wishes to him and his family for good health, happiness and a fulfilling post-service life.
For the men and women he leaves behind, however, his farewell carries a simple military message that needs no ceremonial amplification:
A soldier may retire from command, but never from the values of service.
