On March 30, 2025, actor Jay Patel paid tribute to Shyamji Krishna Varma, the revered revolutionary who played a crucial role in India’s freedom movement. Varma, who passed away on March 30, 1930, in Geneva, Switzerland, was a key figure in inspiring revolutionary nationalism against British rule. Remembering him as the “Kranti Guru of the Revolutionary Movement,” Jay Patel expressed deep respect for Varma’s contributions and emphasized the importance of keeping his legacy alive through cinema and historical awareness.

Jay Patel chronicles the life of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar

Jay Patel is an Indian-American actor and producer known for his portrayal of Shyamji Krishna Varma in the 2024 film Swatantrya Veer Savarkar. Directed by Randeep Hooda, the film chronicles the life of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, highlighting the contributions of revolutionaries like Varma in India’s struggle for independence. Jay Patel’s performance in the film brought renewed attention to Varma’s life and ideological influence.

Preparation for Swatantrya Veer Savarkar

To accurately portray Shyamji Krishna Varma, Jay Patel underwent an intense physical and mental transformation. He gained 5–6 kg (11–13 lbs) to match the historical figure’s appearance and performed the role across three distinct age periods: 56 years old, 65 years old, and 71 years old. Patel endured 4 to 5 hours of makeup daily under extreme summer conditions to achieve Varma’s distinctive look.

Under the direction of Randeep Hooda, Patel also undertook rigorous training to master Varma’s mannerisms, speech patterns, and intellectual presence. His dedication to the role was widely noted for its historical authenticity and meticulous attention to detail.

Jay Patel’s Journey to Shyamji Krishna Varma’s landmarks

In his deep commitment to understanding the revolutionary he portrayed, Jay Patel personally visited key locations associated with Shyamji Krishna Varma:

* Mandvi, Gujarat – Varma’s birthplace, where his legacy remains preserved through the Kranti Teerth Memorial.

* India House, London – The revolutionary hub established by Varma in 1905 to support Indian freedom fighters in Britain.

* Paris, France – One of Varma’s places of residence during his exile, where he continued advocating for Indian independence.

Patel’s journey to these locations was part of his research and a personal tribute to the revolutionary’s enduring impact.

An accomplished scholar and nationalist, he founded India House in London, which became a training ground for many future leaders, including Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. After spending years in exile, Varma passed away in Geneva, Switzerland, on March 30, 1930. His remains were brought back to India in 2003, fulfilling his wish to return to his homeland posthumously.

In addition to his work in Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, Jay Patel produced the Hollywood short film I’m Gonna Tell God Everything, a non-profit project focusing on the devastating effects of war, particularly on women and children. The film gained global recognition for its powerful message on the impact of conflict, receiving over 6 million views worldwide. The project was widely appreciated by prominent actors and humanitarian organizations, further showcasing Jay Patel’s commitment to socially impactful storytelling.
