CHENNAI, MAY 13
In one of the largest frontline workforce welfare initiatives in India’s logistics and e-commerce sector, Amazon India has announced a sweeping expansion of healthcare, insurance and wellness benefits for nearly 90,000 delivery associates across the country, reinforcing its growing focus on human-centric business practices and worker wellbeing.
The initiative significantly enhances financial protection and healthcare access for delivery personnel — the backbone of India’s booming e-commerce ecosystem — while also extending benefits to their families through preventive healthcare, teleconsultation services and nationwide medical camps.
- Amazon India expands healthcare and insurance coverage for nearly 90,000 delivery associates nationwide
- Enhanced benefits include ₹1.5 lakh mediclaim, ₹10 lakh accident cover and OPD support for workers and families
- Nationwide health camps launched with free eye, dental and general medical check-ups
- Initiative forms part of Amazon’s ₹2,800 crore investment in frontline workforce safety, wellness and financial security
Industry observers described the move as a major shift in corporate workforce welfare standards within India’s fast-growing last-mile delivery sector.
Enhanced Health Protection for Frontline Workforce
Under the expanded welfare programme, Amazon India has upgraded:
- Mediclaim coverage up to ₹1.5 lakh
- Outpatient Department (OPD) benefits up to ₹10,000
- Group Personal Accident insurance up to ₹10 lakh
The enhanced coverage is aimed at addressing routine healthcare needs, hospitalization expenses and income protection in case of accidents, temporary disabilities or permanent injuries.
The benefits will be rolled out across all last-mile delivery programmes operated by Amazon India.
Family Wellness Now Part of the Package
In a major human-interest dimension to the initiative, Amazon has extended wellness support not only to delivery associates but also to up to three family members annually.
The programme includes:
- Unlimited multilingual virtual doctor consultations
- Two free in-person OPD visits per family every year
- Discounts on diagnostics and pharmacy services
- Eye and dental care support
- Preventive healthcare and fitness tools
- International second medical opinions
The move is expected to significantly improve access to healthcare for thousands of families dependent on gig and logistics economy jobs.
Free Health Camps Across India
Amazon has also partnered with a third-party insurer to launch nationwide health camps at its delivery stations across metro and Tier-II cities.
The camps offer free:
- Eye examinations
- Dental check-ups
- BMI assessments
- General physician consultations
Associates can access the services by presenting valid government-issued identification at designated centres.
The health camps, which began in March, are also focusing on heat-risk identification and preventive screening as India faces rising summer temperatures.
₹2,800 Crore Workforce Investment
The welfare measures are part of Amazon India’s recently announced investment of over ₹2,800 crore aimed at strengthening:
- Associate safety
- Health and wellness
- Financial wellbeing
- Logistics infrastructure
The investment forms part of Amazon’s broader long-term commitment to invest over $35 billion in India by 2030.
Salim Memon said the company was prioritising the wellbeing of its frontline workforce while scaling operations across India.
“As we continue to invest in our operations network, infrastructure, and frontline workforce across India, the safety and wellbeing of our delivery associates remain a top priority,” he said.
“We have expanded insurance coverage across OPD, hospitalization, and accident benefits to provide more comprehensive support, and are also rolling out nationwide health camps offering free check-ups and preventive care,” Memon added.
Project Ashray Expands Across India
As part of its wider associate welfare framework, Amazon is also rapidly expanding its pioneering “Project Ashray” initiative.
The dedicated rest centres for delivery associates provide:
- Air-conditioned seating
- Drinking water and electrolytes
- Washrooms
- Charging stations
- First-aid facilities
The network is set to expand from 100 to 250 centres across India in 2026.
Importantly, the facilities are open to delivery workers from all companies, not just Amazon associates.
Focus on Safety, Education and Inclusion
Amazon India has simultaneously strengthened:
- 24/7 ambulance and emergency support across 730+ cities
- Road safety and defensive driving training programmes
- Scholarship schemes for children of delivery associates
- Women-centric workplace initiatives including menstrual leave and daycare support
- Upskilling and career progression opportunities
Its flagship “Pratidhi Scholarship” programme supports higher education opportunities for children of delivery workers.
Experts say the company’s broader approach reflects a growing corporate recognition that sustainable logistics growth must be matched by long-term investments in workforce dignity, health and financial resilience.
