CHENNAI, JULY 23

The world’s most celebrated leaders are not remembered merely for the universities they attended. They are remembered for the choices they made, the crises they faced, the values they upheld and the lives they changed. It is this powerful idea that lies at the heart of Beyond the Ivy League: Traits, Skills and Wisdom That Make Great Leaders.

R.N. Singh, General Manager, Southern Railway, has released his new book, Beyond the Ivy League: Traits, Skills and Wisdom That Make Great Leaders, published by globally renowned publishing house Simon & Schuster.

  • Southern Railway GM R.N. Singh’s new book asks a defining question: Do great leaders emerge from elite institutions—or from the wisdom to serve, inspire and take responsibility?
  • Beyond the Ivy League’ published by Simon & Schuster explores the traits, skills and wisdom that shape transformative leaders
  • Book draws on over three decades of R.N. Singh’s experience in Indian Railways, public administration and strategic infrastructure development
  • IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti releases the book at a special function at Integral Coach Factory, Perambur
  • A leadership guide for students, civil servants, entrepreneurs, corporate executives and professionals aspiring to make a meaningful difference

The book was formally released by Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, at a function held at the Dr B.R. Ambedkar Arangam, Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Perambur, Chennai, in the presence of senior railway officials, academicians, distinguished guests and other dignitaries.

The leadership lesson that no university can teach

Beyond the Ivy League moves beyond conventional ideas of leadership centred solely on academic excellence, elite institutions or professional designations.

The book explores the essential traits, decision-making abilities and practical wisdom that enable individuals to become transformative leaders.

Drawing upon more than three decades of distinguished service in the Indian Railways and senior administrative positions, R.N. Singh offers insights into:

  • Strategic governance;
  • Decision-making;
  • Project management;
  • Organisational excellence;
  • Administrative leadership;
  • Executive responsibility; and
  • Values-based public service.

At its core, the book argues that education may provide a foundation, but leadership is ultimately tested through character, integrity, wisdom, resilience and the ability to inspire others.

‘Leadership goes far beyond academic qualifications’

Addressing the gathering, R.N. Singh said leadership rests on three fundamental pillars and extends far beyond academic qualifications.

He noted that while education lays a strong foundation, enduring leadership is built on character, integrity, wisdom, faith and the ability to inspire others.

Citing the examples of Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, he observed that history’s greatest leaders are remembered for their vision, values and commitment to society rather than merely the institutions from which they graduated.

Singh expressed confidence that the book would inspire the younger generation to develop leadership qualities rooted in ethics, resilience and service.

He said the book would be particularly beneficial for students, entrepreneurs, government officials, corporate executives and all those aspiring to shoulder greater responsibilities in public and professional life.

From railway tracks to the tracks of leadership

The book draws deeply from R.N. Singh’s own professional journey.

A distinguished alumnus of IIT Roorkee and an officer of the 1986 batch of the Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE), Singh has held several key leadership positions in Indian Railways and the Ministry of Railways.

His professional responsibilities have included serving as:

  • Principal Executive Director (Infrastructure);
  • Secretary, Railway Board;
  • Managing Director, Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL); and
  • Divisional Railway Manager, Delhi Division.

Over the course of his career, he has played a significant role in policy formulation, strategic management, infrastructure development and the execution of landmark railway projects.

It is this combination of institutional experience and real-world leadership challenges that gives the book its practical perspective.

A book for the next generation of leaders

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. V. Kamakoti lauded the book for its practical approach to leadership.

He observed that the principles discussed in the book would be relevant not only to administrators and professionals but also to students and future leaders navigating an increasingly dynamic world.

At a time when young people are increasingly navigating a competitive world shaped by technology, disruption and rapidly changing expectations, Beyond the Ivy League offers a reminder that leadership cannot be reduced to a degree, designation or résumé.

The book seeks to equip readers with a deeper understanding of how leaders think, decide, respond to adversity and create lasting impact.

The real credentials of a great leader

The central message of Beyond the Ivy League is both simple and profound:

Academic credentials can open doors. But character determines what a person does after entering them.

By bringing together professional experience, leadership lessons and reflections on values, the book is expected to serve as a valuable resource for:

  • Civil servants;
  • Corporate leaders;
  • Entrepreneurs;
  • Management professionals;
  • Educators;
  • Students; and
  • Young professionals aspiring to lead with purpose.

In a world increasingly obsessed with rankings, degrees and institutional brands, Beyond the Ivy League turns the spotlight back on the qualities that truly endure.

Because when the titles disappear and the certificates fade, it is ultimately wisdom, integrity, courage and the ability to inspire others that define the leader.
