NE DEFENCE BUREAU

NEW DELHI, SEPT 1

The sky has never been the limit for women in uniform—but Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma has now pushed the ceiling even higher. In a historic breakthrough for women in India’s Defence Forces, she has become the first non-medical woman officer to attain the rank of Air Vice Marshal, or equivalent two-star rank, opening a new chapter in the country’s journey towards greater gender inclusion in military leadership.

On September 1, 2026, AVM Shakti Sharma assumed charge as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at Air Headquarters, marking a landmark moment not only in the history of the Indian Air Force but also in the continuing evolution of women’s leadership in the Indian military.

Commissioned into the Education Branch of the Indian Air Force on June 18, 1994, AVM Sharma brings more than three decades of distinguished service and an unusually diverse record spanning training establishments, field stations, command headquarters and Air Headquarters.

Her achievement carries a significance far beyond the rank insignia on her shoulders. It demonstrates that women officers can build careers across the full spectrum of military leadership, assume increasingly senior responsibilities and reach the highest echelons of professional service.

From Education Officer To Two-Star Leader

AVM Sharma’s career has been marked by a combination of professional excellence, institutional leadership and a commitment to strengthening the intellectual foundations of India’s defence establishment.

Among her notable contributions has been the establishment of IAF Chairs of Excellence at IIT Kanpur and Pune University, initiatives aimed at promoting academic engagement and strategic defence collaboration.

Her career also entered the history books when she became the first woman officer from the Tri-Services to command a Sainik School, serving as Principal of Sainik School, Kapurthala.

The achievement demonstrated that women officers could successfully shoulder not only specialised responsibilities but also significant institutional command and leadership roles.

A career that changed the question

For generations, the question surrounding women in the military was often framed around whether they could enter particular branches or perform particular roles.

AVM Sharma’s career represents a more consequential shift:

The question is no longer whether women belong in India’s defence leadership—the question is how far they can rise.

Her elevation to Air Vice Marshal provides a powerful example for young women considering careers in the Armed Forces, particularly those who may see defence services as traditionally male-dominated institutions.

Her journey shows that military careers can encompass education, strategy, administration, institutional building, command and national service—and that excellence in any of these areas can open pathways to senior leadership.

A message to India’s daughters: Aim higher

The historic promotion is also an invitation to India’s young women to look at the Armed Forces not merely as a profession, but as a platform for leadership, discipline, intellectual growth, adventure and nation-building.

For students choosing their careers today, the significance of AVM Sharma’s achievement lies precisely in its potential to change aspirations.

A girl watching this milestone need no longer imagine the upper reaches of military leadership as someone else’s destination.

She can see herself there.

From classrooms and training academies to operational establishments and command appointments, women officers are increasingly becoming an integral part of India’s defence architecture.

AVM Sharma’s rise gives that transformation a powerful new symbol.

“Touch the Sky with Glory” — now with a new meaning

Throughout her career, AVM Sharma has embodied the IAF’s celebrated motto, “Touch the Sky with Glory.”

Her elevation gives those words an especially resonant meaning.

Her journey from commissioning in 1994 to becoming the first non-medical woman officer to reach the Air Vice Marshal rank reflects persistence, professional competence and the ability to lead across changing institutional demands.

As she assumes her new responsibility as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education), she will bring that experience to a portfolio directly connected with the intellectual and professional development of the force.

A milestone for one officer—a signal for a generation

AVM Shakti Sharma’s historic elevation is therefore both personal and institutional.

For the Indian Air Force, it marks another step in the continuing evolution of women’s participation in the service.

For the wider Defence Forces, it demonstrates how the contribution of women officers is expanding into senior leadership.

And for thousands of young women across India, it offers perhaps the most powerful message of all:

There is no predetermined ceiling on what a woman in uniform can achieve.

The first woman non-medical Air Vice Marshal has now arrived.

The next generation should not have to wait for another barrier to break before believing that the sky belongs to them too.
