Biscuits major Britannia Industries Limited, which falls under the essential food products category, has on Friday appealed all absent workers, to not be misguided and misled by external forces, and to report to work in the subsequent days, as it is in their interest to do so. The company had already sent four circulars and also a WhatsApp message in this regard. It also seeks the support of community members to help seamlessly operate the factory, beneficial to both, the company and the community, a company release said.

According to a company spokesman, “In these critical and unprecedented times, employees engaged in the manufacture of Essential food items must perform to the nation in ensuring uninterrupted food supply. As per Section 2 (V) of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, Britannia Industries Limited falls under the essential food products category and hence was granted permission on March 26 to resume operations, ensuring the necessary safety measures.
“All the employees were notified about the resumption of operations through official circulars on March 27, April 1, 6, and 10, respectively. The Factory team also sent out WhatsApp messages to the labourers to resume work. The management team had in-person meetings with the village sarpanches to communicate to them that all arrangements (including transport with required social distancing protocol) had been made to resume operations. The sarpanches were invited to the factory for a guided tour of all the stringent safety protocols that were in place. The workers were also provided to stay at the dormitory on-premise should they opt for the same, as well as free canteen food,” he added.
The Company had paid full salary, including for the mandated days of the lockdown i.e. March 25-31. Further, the Company provided the much-needed opportunity to workers to take home a full month’s salary along with attractive added fiscal incentives from April.
Workers who reported to work in April thereby ensured financial security for their families. They were able to take home substantially more salary because of the attractive incentives rolled out by the company. Above all, the company appreciates and acknowledges their commitment to ensuring sustained food supply to the nation.
Company distributes ration kits to 2,500 families
In April, the company had also additionally ensured that the community surrounding the factory does not face food security issues. The factory had organized a humanitarian initiative involving the delivery of over 2,500 ration kits to families in surrounding villages. These ration kits included daily essentials such as rice, dal, oil, and vegetables.
