NE HEALTH BUREAU

GANDHINAGAR, MAY 9

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has given his in principle nod to allocate Rs 70 crore to start the cyclotron project at The Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute (GCRI) here on Tuesday.

Apart from this decision, some important decisions regarding health services were also taken in the high level meeting of the health department held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and in the presence of Health Minister Rushikesh Patel.

Under this cyclotron project, radioactive material will be produced and used for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer within utility buildings.

The initiation of this project at the Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute will enable the availability of radioactive material on demand with high production capacity. Not only this, the per patient examination will also cost less.

1000 square meters of space required for this cyclotron project and its associated system, 1000 square meters of space will be required for construction of cyclotron bunker and construction of five-storey utility building including basement.

Additional Chief Secretary of Health Department  Manoj Aggarwal presented the entire project before Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.

The Cyclotron for Nuclear Medicine project will be completed in approximately two years.

Giving more details about this in the meeting,  Manoj Aggarwal, Additional Chief Secretary of the Health Department, said that due to the current situation, the Nuclear Medicine Department does not have its own cyclotron in the institute, so only about 4 thousand patients are benefited every year.

He added that some molecules have a half-life of only a few minutes. Any such investigation is not possible in this institute at present but due to availability of machine under cyclotron project, any investigation can be done whenever it needs to be done.

It is important to point out here that the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute has been functioning for more than 28 years and the cyclotron project will now be operationalized in this department with the help of the state government.

With the start of this new project, four times the current situation i.e. about 16 thousand patients per year can be benefited from examination and treatment.

Apart from this, material can also be supplied to other hospitals or centers of GCRI such as Siddapur, Rajkot and Bhavnagar in future.

In this high-level meeting, another important decision has also been taken to start a primary health center at Khodiyar in Daskroi taluk of Ahmedabad district.

At present Khodiyar Sub-Health Center is included under Kasindra Primary Health Centre.

8,603 population of three villages namely Khodiyar, Lapkaman and Lilapur get health service treatment from this Khodiyar sub health center.

Apart from this GMERS, Rs 40 crore has been allocated to make Medical College Sola Hospital a model hospital providing world-class facilities, detailed details of the equipment purchased for the excellent performance of departments including radiology, anesthesia, medicine, general surgery, gynaecology, paediatrics, ophthalmology were also discussed in the meeting.
