MADURAI, JAN 29
The state government on Tuesday informed the Madras High Court that the consecration of the Brihadeeswara Temple (Big Temple) in Thanjavur would be done in both Tamil and Sanskrit.
A petition was filed in this regard by G Thirumurugan before the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court.
Several other petitions were filed, seeking to conduct the consecration as per agama dictum.
In the counter affidavit, the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department stated that the Yagasala poojas which are to be performed from February 1 to 5 and the Mahaabishekam, which is to be performed on February 5, includes the practice of Thirumurai Parayanam (Panniru Thirumurai, Abhirami Anthathi, Thirupugazh) which is done in Tamil.
So, they said, importance has already been given to the Tamil language in the practices adopted during the consecration ceremony and it would be performed both in Tamil and Sanskrit as per agama dictum.
