The number of coronavirus cases in Gujarat crossed the 6,000-mark on Tuesday after 441 new cases were reported, while the death of 49 more patients, the highest in a day so far and 39 of them in Ahmedabad, took the toll to 368, a health department official said.
With the addition of new cases, the tally in Gujarat stood at 6,245, the official said.

The state reported the highest single-day positive cases and also the death of COVID-19 patients so far. Of these, Ahmedabad accounted for 349 new cases and 39 deaths.
Vadodara reported 20 new cases and Surat 17.
Banaskantha and Mehsana reported ten new cases, Botad eight, Kheda, Panchmahal, Sabarkantha and Mahisagar four each, Bhavnagar, Gandhinagar, Patan, Aravalli and Junagadh two each, and Rajkot one, the official said.

Among districts in Gujarat that reported deaths of COVID-19 patients Tuesday other than Ahmedabad are Aravalli (1), Gandhinagar (1), Kheda (1), Sabarkantha (1), Surat (2), Vadodara (3), and Mahisagar (1).
Of the patients who died on Tuesday, 34 were classified to be comorbid and high-risk patients, she said.

As many as 186 patients were discharged Tuesday, taking the number of recovered COVID-19 patients in the state to 1,381. Of these, 84 patients were discharged in Ahmedabad, 76 in Surat, and 11 in Vadodara, the official said.
Patients were also discharged from seven other districts.
Junagadh district becomes 32nd district of the state to have coronavirus cases. Two positive cases were reported from the district Tuesday.
Now only Amreli district in the state does not have any coronavirus cases, while all 32 other districts have virus cases.
Principal Secretary (Health) Jayanti Ravi told reporters that the recovery rate in the state has improved to 22.11 per cent from 9.48 per cent ten days ago.
The state’s active cases stood at 4,496, with 29 patients on ventilator and 4,467 in stable condition, Ravi said.
As many as 89,632 samples have been tested so far in the state, 4,984 samples of them in the last 24 hours, Ravi said.
Among districts, Ahmedabad accounts for the highest number of cases at 4,425, followed by Surat at 723 and Vadodara at 405.
Among other districts with the high number of cases are Gandhinagar (79), Rajkot (62), Bhavnagar (76), Anand (75), Panchmahal (49), Banaskantha (49), Mehsana (42), among others.

Ahmedabad records 349 new cases, 39 deaths in a day
Ahmedabad on Tuesday reported its highest single-day spurt in coronavirus cases so far at 349, while daily fatalities in the district also reached a new high of 39, the Gujarat heath department said.
With the latest figures, the number of coronavirus cases in Ahmedabad rose to 4,425, while the death toll shot up to 273, it said.

As many as 84 more patients were discharged from hospitals in Ahmedabad, raising the number of recovered people to 704, the department said.
Out of the total 39 single-day deaths, 23 were men and 16 women, it said.
The case death rate of Ahmedabad city is 5.8 percent, which is higher than the national incidence of 3.2 percent.

The city on Monday had reported 26 deaths, while the fatality figures were 23 and 20 on last Sunday and Saturday, respectively.
The number of fresh cases at 349 was also the highest single-day spike in the city so far. For the last four days, the city was recording 250 to 275 cases every day.

Amid a sharp rise in the number of cases, Vijay Nehra, Municipal Commissioner of Ahmedabad, was home quarantined for two weeks after coming in contact with two coronavirus patients during his field visit, an official said.

The state government replaced him with Vice Chairman and CEO of Gujarat Maritime Board Mukesh Kumar temporarily, an official release said.
Another IAS officer Rajiv Kumar Gupta, serving as Additional Chief Secretary (Forests and Environment), has been appointed for supervision, monitoring and coordination of works related to coronavirus in the city, the release said.

Chief secretary Anil Mukim, principal secretary in the office of the chief minister, K Kailashnathan, and newly appointed officers held a meeting with staff members of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Tuesday evening on how to control the rising number of coronavirus cases and deaths in the city.
Earlier in the day, Nehra said in a video message that the growth rate of active cases in the city has been brought down to below 5 percent, and set a target to bring it further down to nil by May-end.

The city has also achieved a rate of testing of samples at 5,344 per million, Nehra said, while also elaborating that action is being taken to identify potential “super spreaders” by screening a large number of vegetable vendors for coronavirus and providing them with face masks and hand sanitisers.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has issued health cards to vendors in the corporation area as they come in contact with several people, and can infect them if carrying the Covid-19 virus. Today, over 19 vendors were tested positive in Bhaipura Ward.

Pvt experts roped in to contain corona deaths in Ahmedabad
The Gujarat government has roped in private intensive care specialists to advise doctors of the Ahmedabad civil hospital on how to control the high COVID-19 death rate in the city.
The idea to rope in specialists to bring down the death rate was mooted by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, state principal secretary (health) Jayanti Ravi said.
“We have decided to rope in private critical care specialists, who have agreed to give their special service in the wake of the pandemic. On Monday, we had a meeting of our Ahmedabad civil hospital team with some of these specialists,” she said.
They will guide the civil hospital doctors about critical COVID-19 patients on a case-to-case basis, she said, expressing hope that the move would help save lives.
