With Tamil Nadu reporting more than 16,000 dengue cases and nine deaths so far this year, the state’s public health challenge is sharpening the focus on mosquito control, early detection and community participation, even as Health Minister GK Arunraj addresses dengue prevention and the nursing fraternity gathers for the inauguration of the Tamil Nadu Government All Head Nurses Association in Chennai.

The state had recorded 16,334 dengue cases and nine deaths between January 1 and September 16, 2026, according to figures reported by the Health Department. Officials have described the rise as within seasonal expectations, while stressing that preventive measures are being intensified.

Dengue prevention takes centre stage

The dengue situation has remained under close observation as daily case numbers fluctuated during September. Health Minister Arunraj, speaking on the state’s preventive response, has emphasised the government’s efforts to strengthen mosquito-control operations and prepare healthcare facilities for dengue treatment.
The state reported 16,334 cases and nine deaths from January 1 to September 16 this year. For comparison, Tamil Nadu recorded 15,688 cases and 13 deaths during the corresponding period in 2025, while the January–September period in 2024 saw 34,339 cases and 13 deaths, according to figures cited by the Health Department.
Officials have attributed the seasonal fluctuations to monsoon-related conditions and said the current figures do not indicate an unusual outbreak.
Door-to-door drive to eliminate breeding sites
Mosquito-control teams are undertaking door-to-door inspections and working to remove stagnant water, a key breeding ground for mosquitoes that transmit dengue.
Industrial estates and construction companies have also been warned against allowing water to accumulate within their premises, with penalties threatened for violations. The measures form part of the state’s efforts to reduce mosquito breeding and limit transmission.
The emphasis on preventive action comes as changing weather conditions contribute to fluctuations in reported cases. Public cooperation in eliminating water stagnation around homes and workplaces remains an important component of dengue control.
Treatment preparedness and medical training
The Health Department has prepared specific treatment protocols for dengue and provided training to doctors in government hospitals, according to the Minister’s recent briefing.
The preparedness measures are intended to support timely clinical assessment and treatment as seasonal cases rise. Health authorities have also reiterated that the public need not panic, while urging vigilance and cooperation with mosquito-control teams.
Head nurses’ association inaugurated
In a significant event for the nursing community, Health Minister GK Arunraj and Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar jointly lit the auspicious lamp to mark the inauguration of the Tamil Nadu Government All Head Nurses Association at Valluvar Kottam in Chennai on Sunday.
The association’s inauguration brings together the state’s head nurses under a common platform, placing the spotlight on the nursing workforce and its role in public healthcare delivery.
