CHISINAU (MOLDOVA), JULY 20

In a landmark diplomatic milestone that promises to transform India’s engagement with Eastern Europe, President Droupadi Murmu’s first-ever State Visit to Moldova has opened a dynamic new chapter in bilateral relations, blending strategic diplomacy with economic ambition. With a clear message that India’s journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047 will be powered by trusted global partnerships, President Murmu and Moldovan President Maia Sandu unveiled an expansive roadmap covering trade, technology, education, innovation, clean energy and resilient supply chains, while the India-Moldova Business Forum emerged as a catalyst for unlocking fresh business opportunities for enterprises from both nations.

Holding comprehensive one-to-one and delegation-level talks with President Maia Sandu, President Murmu described her visit as a historic milestone reflecting the growing friendship, mutual trust and shared democratic values between India and Moldova. She noted that although geographically distant, the two countries have nurtured warm bilateral ties for more than three decades based on peace, development and international cooperation.

“Economic cooperation remains an important pillar of our partnership. We agreed to promote greater trade and investment, strengthen resilient supply chains, improve connectivity and encourage closer engagement between our business communities,” President Murmu said.

The two leaders agreed to significantly expand collaboration in agriculture, logistics, infrastructure, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), Artificial Intelligence and innovation, recognising these sectors as engines of sustainable growth for both countries.

Addressing the India–Moldova Business Forum, President Murmu projected India as a reliable global investment destination driven by entrepreneurship, digital transformation, manufacturing excellence and one of the world’s youngest skilled workforces.

“As India advances towards its vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, we seek partnerships built on trust and shared prosperity,” she said. Highlighting Moldova’s strategic location, reform-oriented outlook and increasing integration with European markets, the President described the country as an attractive destination for Indian businesses looking to expand their European footprint.

She underlined enormous opportunities for collaboration in digital technologies, Artificial Intelligence, cybersecurity, fintech, renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, agriculture and food processing.

President Murmu also said Indian companies were keen to participate in Moldova’s renewable energy initiatives, including solar power, battery storage, smart grids, green hydrogen and other clean technologies, while inviting Moldovan businesses to explore India’s transparent, predictable and investor-friendly business ecosystem.

“India offers good business opportunities to Moldovan companies for trade and investment. We remain committed to fostering a transparent, predictable and investor-friendly business environment,” she said.

To deepen people-to-people ties, President Murmu announced that India would double the number of ITEC training slots for Moldovan professionals, including specialised programmes in Artificial Intelligence and other emerging technologies. She also invited Moldovan diplomats to participate in AI and Cyber Diplomacy courses at India’s Foreign Service Institute.

Reaffirming India’s principled foreign policy, the President stressed that both countries shared a commitment to peace, dialogue and international law.

“India has consistently supported early resolution of all conflicts, disputes and tensions through dialogue and diplomacy. We have always stood by the side of peace,” she said.

The visit also carries significant importance for the Indian community in Moldova, which includes nearly 2,000 Indian nationals, of whom around 1,800 are medical students, making them one of the country’s largest foreign student communities.

President Murmu was warmly received at Chisinau International Airport by Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi, before being accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour by President Maia Sandu at the Presidential Palace.

Moldova marks the first stop of President Murmu’s three-nation European tour, which will also take her to North Macedonia and Romania, reflecting India’s growing diplomatic outreach across Europe and its expanding strategic engagement with emerging partners.
