What happens when the hospital bedside meets the engineering laboratory? A new academia-industry partnership between Apollo Knowledge and the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (BITS Pilani) seeks to answer that question by bringing clinical expertise, engineering, technology and data science into a common ecosystem for healthcare research and workforce development.

The two institutions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate across joint research, Work Integrated Learning programmes and specialised allied health and healthcare technology education, potentially creating new pathways for professionals who want to upgrade their skills without stepping away from the workplace.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, Founder-Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group; Dr. Preetha Reddy, Executive Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited; and Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao, Group Vice-Chancellor, BITS Pilani.
When clinical problems meet engineering solutions
At the heart of the partnership is the convergence of two complementary strengths: Apollo’s extensive clinical environment and healthcare ecosystem, and BITS Pilani’s capabilities in engineering, technology and data science.
Clinicians and researchers from BITS Pilani will explore joint research addressing real-world clinical and healthcare challenges. Specific research themes will be identified and developed as the collaboration progresses, creating scope for academic expertise to be applied to problems emerging directly from healthcare practice.
The objective is not technology for technology’s sake, but technology shaped by the needs of patients, professionals and healthcare institutions.
Learn while you work
One of the potentially significant elements of the partnership is the proposed development of Work Integrated Learning programmes for healthcare professionals.
The model would allow doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and healthcare managers to pursue qualifications while continuing in their jobs, with learning designed around the realities of their existing roles.
Potential areas include healthcare logistics and supply chain, pharmacy and hospital finance, with curricula structured around the work professionals actually perform.
For a healthcare sector undergoing rapid technological and operational change, the model could provide a mechanism for continuous professional development without disconnecting education from workplace experience.
Building the healthcare technologist
The partnership will also explore technology-focused learning for students, tailored to the roles they are preparing to enter.
This could extend across learners at The Apollo University, medical and nursing colleges within the Apollo network, and Apollo Healthcare Academy’s partner institutions.
Specialised programmes in allied health and healthcare technology will be another area of exploration, bringing together BITS Pilani’s competency centres and clinical training opportunities within Apollo hospitals.
The larger ambition is to narrow the distance between what students learn in classrooms and laboratories and what modern healthcare systems increasingly demand on the ground.

Dr. Preetha Reddy, Executive Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Group, said:

She said the partnership aims to nurture professionals “ready not only for the future of healthcare, but ready to shape it.”
Engineering with a human consequence
Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao, Group Vice-Chancellor, BITS Pilani, underlined the direct connection between engineering and healthcare outcomes.
“Healthcare is one of the areas where good engineering makes a direct difference to people’s lives. The collaboration creates opportunities to work with Apollo’s clinical ecosystem and with a large base of healthcare professionals and students.”
He added:
“We bring the technology, data science and a proven model of teaching people who are already working. We expect this collaboration to produce both research and trained professionals.”
The partnership thus places people, practice and technology at the intersection of healthcare education—seeking to create a talent pipeline capable of understanding not only how healthcare works, but how engineering and technology can help transform it.
