When a General Counsel walks into a boardroom today, the question is no longer simply, “What does the law permit?” It is increasingly, “What should the enterprise do—and how can it do so responsibly?” Recognising this dramatic transformation in the role of legal leadership, Cyril Shroff and IIM Ahmedabad have joined hands to create the Cyril Shroff–IIMA GC Leadership Academy, a pioneering initiative aimed at preparing General Counsels for the complexities of the modern enterprise.
Cyril Shroff and the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Saturday to establish the Academy as a research and executive development platform for the General Counsel community. The MoU signing and formal launch took place at the IIMA campus.
The initiative seeks to address a growing leadership gap: while General Counsels traditionally focused on legal advice and compliance, today’s corporate legal leaders increasingly find themselves at the intersection of business strategy, governance, finance, technology, risk management and organisational transformation.
The Academy is therefore envisioned as a premier learning hub that will create world-class knowledge products, executive education and thought leadership, while building a strong professional network for senior legal leaders.
When the GC becomes a business leader
The initiative reflects Shroff’s long-standing commitment to institution-building in the legal profession and his vision of creating a platform capable of preparing the next generation of in-house legal leaders.
For IIMA, the partnership extends its mission of developing leaders at the intersection of business, law and governance, bringing its strengths in management education, interdisciplinary learning and research to an evolving professional constituency.
The Academy will focus on four broad priorities.
Boardroom and enterprise leadership
GCs will be equipped with strategic judgement, decision-making capabilities and the confidence required for boardroom engagement and enterprise-wide leadership.
Business, finance and strategy integration
The programme will deepen understanding of finance, strategy, governance, risk, organisational behaviour and business transformation.
Technology, AI and emerging-risk readiness
Legal leaders will be prepared to navigate artificial intelligence, digital transformation, cybersecurity and the governance implications of emerging technologies.
Global peer learning and thought leadership
The Academy will create a curated community of senior GCs with opportunities for peer learning, international exposure, certification and knowledge creation around the future of legal leadership.
The boardroom needs more than legal expertise
The changing corporate environment has made specialised executive education increasingly important for General Counsels.
Legal excellence alone may no longer be sufficient for a leader expected to understand financial implications, strategic priorities, organisational behaviour, technological disruption and business transformation.
The Academy seeks to bridge precisely that gap.
IIMA’s case-based pedagogy and academic strengths across strategy, finance, marketing, human resources, negotiation, organisational behaviour, decision science, AI and public policy will complement the legal expertise of practising professionals.
The objective is to create leaders who can connect legal judgement with commercial realities—and make decisions with a broader understanding of the enterprise.

Prof. Sandip Chakrabarti and Prof. Ranjan Ghosh, who are leading the Academy at IIMA, said the partnership would combine complementary strengths in legal leadership and management education.
