NEW DELHI, AUG 15

What if India’s next Olympic champion is today a five-year-old playing in a village schoolyard? What if the next sporting revolution begins not in an elite academy, but in every school, city and village across the country? Prime Minister Narendra Modi turned the 80th Independence Day address into a powerful call to unlock that possibility, placing youth power, sporting excellence, employment, entrepreneurship and education at the heart of India’s journey towards a Viksit Bharat by 2047.

Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort, Modi presented young Indians not merely as beneficiaries of development, but as the principal force that will shape India’s future.

“The greatest beneficiary of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ will be the youth of my country.”

And nowhere was that confidence more visible than in his vision for India’s sporting future.

From 5-year-old hopefuls to Olympic champions

With India seeking to host the 2036 Olympics, Modi announced an ambitious nationwide talent-hunt campaign for children aged 5 to 15, aimed at identifying sporting talent in villages, cities and schools and nurturing potential future champions.

“If we need athletes for 2036, we must focus today on these young boys and girls who are 5, 10 or 15 years old. We must pay attention to our daughters as well.”

He said the talent hunt would identify promising children, assess their abilities and provide specialised training to help them develop into athletes capable of representing India on the international stage.

The Prime Minister said India’s performance in global sport was steadily improving and declared that the country was moving forward as a strong contender to host the 2036 Olympics.

“Bharat’s performance in the world of sports is steadily improving, and we are moving forward as strong contenders to host the 2036 Olympics.”

India will also host the Commonwealth Games in 2030, he noted.

Modi pointed out that the Olympics comprise around 40 sports and 325–350 events, but India currently does not participate in nearly two-thirds of those events.

“In nearly two-thirds of these 325 events, Bharat does not even participate. We are not present; we do not qualify. We have decided that we want the 2036 Olympics to be held in Bharat. Bharat must focus on these areas.”

Sports becomes an ecosystem, not just a medal hunt

The Prime Minister underlined that India’s sporting transformation extends beyond athletes and medals, with opportunities opening up across the entire sports ecosystem.

“The TOPS scheme has achieved tremendous success. Khelo India Games, University Games, Winter Games, Beach Games, sports infrastructure, coaching for sports, sports medicine and sports nutrition, Bharat is moving forward towards achieving excellence in all these areas.”

He pointed out that even youngsters who do not become athletes can find careers in the rapidly expanding support system surrounding sport.

“For young people, even if they are unable to become athletes themselves, a vast new field of opportunities is opening up within the support system around sports.”

The message was clear: India’s sporting dream requires not just champions on the field, but coaches, trainers, sports scientists, nutritionists, doctors, administrators and professionals behind the champions.

₹1 lakh crore jobs push for 3.5 crore youth

Moving from the playing field to the workplace, Modi announced the launch of the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rojgar Yojana, describing it as a major employment initiative for the country’s young population.

“Today, on August 15th, we are launching and implementing a scheme worth Rs 1 lakh crore for the youth of my country.”

Under the scheme, the government will provide ₹15,000 to young people entering private-sector employment, while companies generating additional employment opportunities will receive incentives.

Modi said the initiative would create new employment opportunities for approximately 3.5 crore youth, giving India’s demographic dividend a direct push towards productive employment.

‘Nasha Mukt Bharat’ becomes a national mission

The Prime Minister also sounded a strong warning against substance abuse, describing drug abuse as a major crisis confronting India and its young people.

“Drug abuse is becoming a major crisis for the country and its young people. A ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat’ must be a collective responsibility for all of us.”

He called for a united national effort to protect the country’s younger generation.

“For the sake of our bright future, our younger generation must be strong, and the strength of our youth must be harnessed for the progress of our country.”

Modi connected the fight against addiction directly with the nation’s development aspirations, emphasising that India’s youth must be physically, mentally and socially empowered to drive the country’s transformation.

‘Youth power’ at the centre of Viksit Bharat

Reiterating the centrality of young Indians to the country’s future, Modi said youth participation must become an integral part of the Viksit Bharat mission.

“If there is one, it is the youth of my country, the youth power of the country. The youth have a very important role to play in the journey towards a ‘Viksit Bharat’.”

He added: “Therefore, we must take forward the goal of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by connecting it with the aspirations and participation of our youth. We must move forward with our youth as our highest priority.”

The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s rapidly expanding entrepreneurial ecosystem, noting that Startup India now has more than 2.5 lakh registered startups.

Pointing to the Government’s ₹1 lakh crore Innovation Fund, he issued a direct invitation to young entrepreneurs:

“Come forward with your dreams; we will ensure that there is no shortage of resources.”

Free coaching to put opportunity within reach

Recognising the financial pressure of competitive-examination coaching on middle-class families, Modi announced a new initiative for free online coaching for young people preparing for various examinations.

“The pressure of coaching classes has become a major burden for our middle-class families.”

He added: “Therefore, we have decided to provide free online coaching for young people preparing for various examinations.”

The initiative will draw on India’s digital public infrastructure, teaching talent and educators to create an extensive online coaching network.

“We have the digital public infrastructure, we have excellent talent, and we have teachers. By bringing these resources together, we are going to build an extensive network to provide free coaching to the young people of the country.”

From the school playground to the Olympic arena, from the classroom to the startup boardroom and from the examination hall to the world of employment, Modi’s Independence Day message sought to paint India’s youth as the decisive force behind the country’s next leap.

The underlying call was unmistakable: India’s 2047 dream will not be built for its youth, but by its youth.
