In a proud and defining moment for Tamil Nadu, decorated Army veteran N S Raja Subramani has been appointed as India’s next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), placing a Tamil-origin military strategist at the helm of the country’s integrated defence architecture.

Government of India appoints Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM (Retd.) as the next Chief of Defence Staff, who will also serve as Secretary, Department of Military Affairs. He will assume office after Gen Anil Chauhan completes his tenure on 30 May 2026.

The Government of India on Friday announced the appointment of Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani, PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM (Retd), as the new CDS and Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, with effect from the date he assumes office.

  • Decorated Tamil-origin Army veteran to succeed General Anil Chauhan as India’s highest-ranking military officer
  • Battle-hardened strategist brings over four decades of operational experience across borders and conflict zones
  • Former Vice Chief of Army Staff to lead integrated military reforms and Department of Military Affairs
  • Madras University scholar and global defence alumnus rises to one of India’s most powerful strategic appointments

He will succeed Anil Chauhan, whose tenure concludes on May 30, 2026.

The appointment is being hailed in defence and strategic circles as the rise of a deeply experienced soldier-scholar who has spent more than 40 years serving across some of India’s toughest operational theatres — from insurgency-hit Assam to the tense Western and Northern borders.

Currently serving as Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat since September 2025, Raja Subramani earlier held the prestigious post of Vice Chief of the Army Staff between July 2024 and July 2025. He also served as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command, overseeing key strategic military formations.

A graduate of the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy, he was commissioned into the 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985.

What makes his journey especially inspiring is the blend of battlefield leadership and academic excellence that has shaped his career. An alumnus of the Joint Services Command Staff College in the United Kingdom and the National Defence College in New Delhi, Raja Subramani also holds a Master’s degree from King’s College London and an MPhil in Defence Studies from University of Madras.

Military observers note that his appointment reflects the increasing importance of integrated military leadership and strategic coordination at a time when India faces evolving geopolitical and security challenges.

Throughout his illustrious career, Raja Subramani commanded critical formations in high-risk operational environments. He led 16 Garhwal Rifles during counter-insurgency operations in Assam under Operation Rhino, commanded an infantry brigade in Jammu & Kashmir, headed the 17 Mountain Division in the Central Sector and later commanded the elite 2 Corps — the Indian Army’s premier strike corps on the Western Front.

His vast experience also spans intelligence, operations, military diplomacy and strategic planning. He served as Defence Attaché in Kazakhstan, held senior operational roles in Eastern and Northern Commands, worked in Military Intelligence and was Chief Instructor (Army) at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington.

Defence experts believe his deep understanding of both the Western and Northern theatres will be crucial in shaping India’s future military preparedness and integrated warfighting capabilities.

For his exceptional service to the nation, Raja Subramani has been decorated with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal.

His elevation to the country’s top military position is being celebrated not just as a strategic appointment, but also as an inspiring human-interest story of a Tamil-origin officer rising through grit, scholarship and battlefield leadership to occupy one of India’s most powerful defence posts.
