NEW DELHI, AUG 23

For the BJP, Gujarat is no longer simply another State heading for an Assembly election in 2027 — it is the political laboratory where the party’s organisational prowess will face its next major test. With the Narendra Modi-Amit Shah home turf at stake, BJP president Nitin Nabin has begun laying the organisational groundwork well ahead of the polls, putting grassroots mobilisation and youth outreach at the centre of the party’s strategy.

  • Nabin’s high-level meet comes days after Gujarat gets a key place in BJP’s revamped national structure

Nabin on Sunday held an intensive meeting with the BJP’s newly appointed national office-bearers, State unit presidents, State in-charges and other senior functionaries at the party headquarters in New Delhi to discuss preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections in seven States, including Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. BJP national general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh also attended the meeting.

The timing is significant for Gujarat. Just days earlier, Nabin appointed Tarun Chugh as the BJP’s Gujarat in-charge, giving him sole responsibility for organisational and election coordination in the State ahead of the 2027 contest.

Gujarat gets the ‘sole-charge’ treatment

The BJP’s decision to entrust Gujarat to Chugh assumes significance as the party prepares to seek an eighth consecutive term in power in the State. The appointment is being viewed as an early signal that the party intends to approach the Gujarat election as a long-term organisational exercise rather than a last-minute campaign.

The reshuffle has simultaneously given Gujarat a prominent footprint in Nabin’s new national team. Varshaben Narendra Doshi has been appointed national vice-president, while Jagdish Ishwarbhai Patel and Rohan Gupta have been made national secretaries. Jagdish Patel has also been given the responsibility of heading the BJP’s Yuva Morcha.

The emphasis on Gujarat’s organisational talent comes as Nabin seeks to combine experienced political managers with a younger leadership layer. The BJP’s new national team reportedly has 51 new faces, underscoring the leadership’s attempt to inject fresh energy into the organisation ahead of the next electoral cycle.

‘24×7, 365-day’ election mode

The latest strategy meeting is the culmination of a preparation process that began months before the 2027 elections. Party sources had said in April that Nabin had already set the “ground work” in motion across the seven poll-bound States under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The BJP’s philosophy was summed up by a party source at the time:

“The BJP never sleeps.”

The source had described the party as remaining in “24×7, 365-day” action mode, contrasting its continuous organisational activity with parties that traditionally intensify their preparations closer to polling.

That strategy now appears to be entering a more structured phase, with the new national team, State in-charges and organisational machinery being aligned towards the 2027 contests.

Modi’s five-hour message: stay grounded

The Sunday meeting followed a crucial interaction on Saturday between Prime Minister Modi and the BJP’s 67 newly appointed national office-bearers.

Modi spent more than five hours at the BJP headquarters interacting with the new team. He later described the meeting as one focused on ideas, perspectives and strengthening the party’s connection with people.

“Organisational meetings are all about new ideas and perspectives aimed at strengthening the Party and deepening connect with the people. Great interaction with fellow party colleagues and the new organisational team,”

Modi said in a post accompanying photographs of the interaction.

According to party sources, Modi listened to each office-bearer and offered “vital suggestions”, particularly on increasing outreach, strengthening youth engagement and remaining connected with people through greater on-ground activity.

For Gujarat, that message could translate into intensified booth-level mobilisation, youth outreach and sustained engagement with voters well before the election calendar formally takes shape.

From Vande Mataram to Gen Z, BJP widens the campaign canvas

The organisational meetings also laid down broader political themes for the BJP. At its Saturday meeting, the party passed a 10-point resolution criticising the Congress over its decision to sing only two stanzas of Vande Mataram at its events and resolved to launch a nationwide campaign highlighting the significance and history of the national song.

The BJP said it would particularly seek to educate and mobilise younger generations, stressing the sacrifices and patriotic awakening associated with Vande Mataram.

The party’s simultaneous emphasis on Gen Z outreach and youth engagement suggests that its 2027 strategy is not being confined to conventional booth politics.

For Gujarat, where the BJP has built one of its strongest organisational bases, the challenge will be to convert that established machinery into a fresh electoral narrative — particularly among younger voters and a rapidly changing urban electorate.

The Gujarat test begins long before the ballot

With the BJP government already in office under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the 2027 contest will be watched closely as a test of whether the party can extend its uninterrupted dominance in Gujarat into another term.

The latest organisational moves suggest that the BJP is taking no chances. A new national team, a dedicated Gujarat in-charge, greater representation for Gujarat leaders, youth mobilisation and an early grassroots push are being assembled into one electoral architecture.

And that may be the most consequential message from Nabin’s strategy meet: in Gujarat, the BJP’s 2027 campaign has effectively begun long before the first campaign slogan is raised or the first vote is cast.
