Micron has chosen Gujarat to set up its manufacturing facility considering important factors such as robust manufacturing infrastructure, business-friendly environment and availability of well-planned talent pool along with excellent support from the state government
“Semiconducter is a foundational industry. It is used in a number of items like television screens, computers, mobile, cars and even trains,” Vaishnaw said.
A government release said that India has been dependent on the import of semiconductor chips and the demand for them will increase as the manufacturing sector in the country grows.
For the last many decades India is dependent upon import of semiconductor chips and the demand for them will increase as the manufacturing sector in the country grows, it said.
The plant at Sanand will entail a total investment of $2.75 billion (around Rs 22,540 crore), it added.
Micron’s plant has been approved under the Union government’s `Modified Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) Scheme’.
Under the scheme, Micron will receive 50 per cent fiscal support for the total project cost from the Indian government and incentives representing 20 per cent of the total project cost from the Gujarat government.
The State Government has established a dedicated organization ‘Gujarat State Electronic Mission (GSEM)’ to attract semiconductor sector industries to Gujarat and provide all necessary cooperation.
The establishment of this project will bring about a major change in the semiconductor manufacturing sector in India. A total of 20,000 jobs will be created with 5,000 direct and 15,000 indirect jobs.
This MoU signed between the Government of Gujarat and Micron Technology is a landmark moment for the country. The domestic semiconductor ecosystem will also get a boost as ancillary industries for raw materials and finished products suited to this sector are also attracted to Gujarat.
Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation has developed 45,000 hectares of land in the state with plug and play facility.
Micron has selected Sanand GIDC-II for its new ATMP facility. Sanand GIDC is a highly industrialized zone, with several reputed national and international manufacturing industries operating here.
On this occasion the Vice Chairman and Managing Director of GIDC Dr Rahul Gupta handed over the offer cum allotment (OCA) letter for allotment of 93 acres of land to Micron.
Micron will set up an assembly and testing facility within Sanand GIDC Estate, the company will focus on converting semiconductor wafers into ball grid array (BGA) integrated circuit packages, memory modules solid-state drives at this facility.
This plant at Sanand will attract other industries to Gujarat operating in the country’s semiconductor supply chain. Not only this, it will also inspire global semiconductor giants- global industrial houses to set up their hi-tech manufacturing facilities in Gujarat.
On this occasion, the Ministers of the State Government, Chief Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Kailasanathan, Chief Secretary Rajkumar, Senior Secretaries, office bearers of Micron Company were present.
