Built with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) support worth Rs. 4.5 crore from Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, the advanced research infrastructure is expected to accelerate high-end experimental studies in hydrodynamics, marine vehicles, offshore systems and underwater technologies.

The state-of-the-art facility marks a significant collaboration between academia and India’s defence manufacturing sector under the broader vision of technological self-reliance and maritime innovation.

A New Era for Ocean Engineering Research

The hybrid wind and circulating water channel facility was inaugurated in the presence of V. Kamakoti and Jagmohan, along with senior officials, researchers and stakeholders from both institutions.

Designed to provide a stable and uniform-flow testing environment, the sophisticated research facility will enable advanced hydrodynamic investigations involving ship models, propellers and bluff bodies.

Experts said the infrastructure will play a crucial role in enhancing experimental capabilities for marine transportation systems, offshore engineering structures, underwater vehicles and fluid dynamics research.

The new centre is also expected to become an important training and educational resource for students and researchers in the Department of Ocean Engineering at IIT Madras.

Strengthening India’s Maritime Innovation Ecosystem

Speaking on the collaboration, Ashwin Mahalingam, Dean (Alumni and Corporate Relations), IIT Madras, said the initiative would significantly strengthen technology development in ocean engineering while opening up valuable research opportunities for students, scientists and industry stakeholders.

Capt. Jagmohan stressed that academic-industry partnerships are essential for building indigenous capabilities and reducing dependence on foreign technologies in strategic maritime sectors.

He noted that such collaborations directly support India’s “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” mission by fostering homegrown innovation in shipbuilding, naval engineering and marine technologies.

Bigger Maritime Research Plans on the Horizon

The partnership between IIT Madras and Mazagon Dock is expected to expand further with ambitious future projects already under discussion.

Among them is the proposed large-scale HYDRA Centre featuring a massive 500-metre towing tank aimed at supporting advanced maritime research and testing.

The two organisations are also exploring collaborative research on indigenous high-efficiency subzero refrigeration systems for naval submarines — a critical area for defence technology and underwater operational capability.

Industry observers believe the launch positions IIT Madras among India’s leading hubs for advanced maritime science, engineering innovation and ocean technology education.
