India and Vietnam have renewed their push to deepen maritime and defence cooperation, with New Delhi and Hanoi underlining the importance of a peaceful, stable and rules-based regional security architecture amid evolving strategic dynamics in the Indo-Pacific.
The renewed emphasis came during a meeting between Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of National Defence, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Truong Thang, in New Delhi on Sunday, following the recent high-level bilateral engagement between the Prime Ministers of India and Vietnam on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit.
The meeting focused on strengthening the longstanding bonds of friendship between the two countries and advancing their Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with particular attention to practical defence cooperation.
The two sides discussed accelerating joint initiatives, technology sharing and defence industrial collaboration, while reaffirming their shared commitment to expanding maritime and defence ties in support of regional peace and security.
India and Vietnam also emphasised the importance of close coordination in multilateral and multilateral-led security mechanisms to address increasingly complex regional security challenges. Particular significance was attached to active engagement through the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus) framework.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing practical defence cooperation through ASEAN-led mechanisms, recognising the role of collaborative platforms such as the ADMM-Plus Experts’ Working Groups in strengthening regional stability and building collective security architectures in the Indo-Pacific.
The discussions also carried forward the momentum generated by the strategic vision outlined by the two Prime Ministers during their BRICS Summit engagement.
As part of the continuing institutional dialogue, India and Vietnam agreed to hold the next Defence Policy Dialogue in India on the sidelines of Aero India 2027.
The latest interaction underlines the growing strategic convergence between New Delhi and Hanoi, particularly in maritime security, defence technology, industrial cooperation and ASEAN-led regional mechanisms.
At a time when the Indo-Pacific is witnessing rapidly evolving security dynamics, the India-Vietnam partnership is increasingly emerging as an important pillar of regional stability, maritime security and a rules-based order.
