Indian Navy divers on Sunday recovered the body of a fisherman from the wreckage of the fishing boat Suja Mol that sank 39 nautical miles off the Kanyakumari coast on September 25.
On request received from the Fisheries Department of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, the Indian Naval Ships ‘Nireekshak’ and ‘Jamuna’ undertook an extensive search for two missing fishermen suspected to have been onboard a fishing boat which sank on 25 Sep 2023, about 39 Nautical Miles off the coast of Kanyakumari.
After a mammoth search operation by the Indian Naval ships utilising multi-beam echo-sounder and towed-side Scan Sonar, the sunken boat was located on Saturday at a depth of 57 meters. The Naval divers onboard INS ‘Nireekshak’ thereafter undertook deep sea diving for over eight hours on Sunday and finally located one body from the debris of the boat.
The ill-fated boat with a 16-member crew sailed from Colachel Fishing Harbour on September 25 and sank three days later after being hit by a massive tidal wave. While 13 persons were rescued on September 19, three remained missing. One body was recovered on September 30.
