For millions of NEET aspirants, the issue is no longer merely whether an examination paper was leaked. It is whether a student who studies honestly for years can still trust the system that decides the course of his or her life.
Amid mounting protests, political confrontation, judicial scrutiny and growing anxiety among students and parents over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured the nation that those who compromise the future of young people will face swift and stringent action.
In a significant announcement on Thursday, the Prime Minister said the Government had decided to set up fast-track courts to ensure speedy punishment in paper-leak cases.
In a post on X, Modi said:
“Nothing is more important than the welfare and future of our youth! We have decided to set up fast-track courts to ensure swift and stringent punishment for those involved in paper leaks. Have directed the concerned authorities and officials to take all necessary steps in this regard.”
The Prime Minister underlined that the decision was part of a series of measures being taken by the Central Government for “safeguarding the interests of students”.
Issuing a strong warning to those who undermine examination integrity, he added:
“Those who try to harm the future of our youth will not be spared. The welfare and future of the country’s youth is our topmost priority.”
The assurance comes at a moment when the NEET controversy has moved well beyond the examination hall—into the streets, Parliament and the courts.
From paper leak to national trust crisis
The Central Bureau of Investigation is investigating the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak after registering a case based on a complaint from the Department of Higher Education. The investigation covers alleged criminal conspiracy, cheating, breach of trust, theft and destruction of evidence, among other offences.
The CBI has also arrested several accused in connection with the alleged leak, including individuals accused of having access to question papers and those allegedly involved in circulating questions and answers to prospective candidates before the examination.
The Prime Minister’s fast-track court announcement therefore addresses one of the central concerns of students and parents: investigation alone cannot restore faith unless those found guilty are brought to justice within a credible timeframe.
The challenge before the Government is now to ensure that the promised fast-track mechanism is transparent, legally robust and capable of delivering convictions—not merely arrests.
Centre opens door to dialogue aS CJP protests intensify
A day before the Prime Minister’s announcement, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda said the Centre was open to discussions with all stakeholders on the examination paper-leak issue.
Nadda said the Government had met representatives of the protesting CJP and heard their concerns in a cordial atmosphere.
“The discussion took place in a very cordial atmosphere. We listened to their views very calmly. I told them it would be better if they submitted their points in writing, and they have done so. We are ready for discussions whenever they ask.”
He clarified that no fresh meeting had taken place on Wednesday.
The Government has also urged activist Sonam Wangchuk to end his hunger strike and join what it described as the mainstream dialogue process.
The CJP has raised three principal demands:
- Release of Sonam Wangchuk
- Resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan
- ₹1 crore compensation to the families of NEET aspirants who died by suicide
The organisation has also demanded accountability over the alleged handling of students and protesters during demonstrations.
Supreme Court: ‘Accountability’ remains the core issue
The Supreme Court has already expressed serious concern over the NEET controversy.
During earlier hearings on the alleged paper leak, the Court questioned whether the examination system had learned the necessary lessons and stressed the need for real accountability. It also sought responses from the Centre, NTA and CBI on pleas seeking major reforms in the examination system.
On July 21, the Supreme Court declined to entertain a PIL seeking a standardised, time-bound investigation mechanism for examination paper leaks, observing that the matter was not one for the Court to take up in that form.
On Wednesday, the Court also declined an attempt to raise the ongoing Delhi protests during another proceeding, with the Chief Justice telling the lawyer not to waste the Court’s time.
The judicial developments underline a crucial distinction: the courts can examine legality, accountability and constitutional rights, but the executive must build a system in which examination leaks are prevented, investigated and prosecuted efficiently.
Delhi High Court monitors Wangchuk’s health
As the protest movement intensified, the Delhi High Court intervened on the medical condition of Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on an indefinite hunger strike.
The Court directed the Centre to ensure regular medical monitoring and immediate intervention if required, observing:
“The life of any citizen is precious.”
The Court later held that the Government’s decision to shift Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital was not arbitrary and refused interim relief sought by his wife for his immediate discharge for treatment at a private hospital.
The judicial intervention brought the focus sharply back to the human cost of the confrontation. While the political and legal debate continues, the health of a fasting protester has added urgency to calls for dialogue and de-escalation.
Rahul Gandhi: ‘Students are not terrorists’
Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has extended full support to the protesting students and said their demands—including the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan—were legitimate and non-negotiable.
Addressing a press conference, Gandhi said: “Protesting students are not terrorists and are simply asking for an education system that works and is fair.”
He demanded an apology to students from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and accountability for those responsible for the alleged assault on students.
Gandhi also said: “Sensible police personnel feel that action against students is a crime against the future of the country.”
Referring to his own removal from the protest site outside the Prime Minister’s residence, Gandhi said: “How I was treated is irrelevant to me. I don’t care. Treat me five times worse, I don’t care. The focus has to be on what was done to students, on the education system, on paper leaks, and the costs that these children have been forced to pay. Do whatever you want with me, five times, ten times more, I don’t care.”
He added: “A couple of punches are not a problem at all. I am happy to take many more.”
Gandhi alleged that the education system had become “rigged” and unaffordable for poor and middle-class families.
“Children have committed suicides, they go through unlimited stress and there is a legitimate, very deep problem in this country.”
He claimed that 152 paper leaks had occurred in the last decade, affecting 7.5 crore students, and alleged that there had been no convictions in those cases.
“Every month lakhs of students are told that all the stress you went through, you will have to undergo it again and ‘we don’t give a damn’.”
He further alleged: “A group of people are destroying our education system and the lives of our students.”
Gandhi also claimed that Indian families spend ₹1.32 lakh crore annually on examinations—nearly comparable to the education budget—and described the financial burden imposed by repeated examinations and coaching as:
“Pure theft from these families.”
The Government has rejected the Opposition’s demand to make the Education Minister’s resignation a precondition for discussion, saying Parliament is the appropriate forum for a detailed debate on the issue.
Centre: Parliament the forum for a long-term solution
Nadda reiterated that the Government wanted a detailed debate on examination paper leaks and said Parliament was the most appropriate forum to evolve a long-term policy.
The Government has also maintained that street protests alone cannot resolve the issue and has called for a structured discussion on examination reform.
This is where the concerns of all stakeholders converge.
Students want a fair chance.
Parents want their years of sacrifice and financial investment protected.
Teachers want merit to remain meaningful.
Coaching institutions want a level playing field.
Opposition parties demand accountability.
The Government must demonstrate that its promises can translate into a secure, transparent and credible examination system.
And the courts continue to remind the State that the rights, dignity and safety of citizens cannot be brushed aside.
The PM’s assurance must now become a systemic guarantee
The Prime Minister’s promise of fast-track courts has the potential to become a turning point—but only if it is accompanied by a comprehensive examination-security architecture.
The nation now needs:
- Time-bound investigation and prosecution of paper-leak cases
- Swift and transparent action against every person found guilty, irrespective of position
- Secure end-to-end question-paper generation, storage and transportation
- Independent auditing of examination systems
- Stronger cyber-security and digital surveillance safeguards
- Accountability at every stage of the examination chain
- Protection of whistle-blowers and students who report irregularities
- A transparent grievance-redressal mechanism
- Greater psychological support for students facing repeated examination uncertainty
- A national framework to prevent paper leaks across competitive examinations
The Government’s latest assurance is important because it acknowledges the seriousness of the crisis. But for students, the final test will not be the announcement of fast-track courts.
It will be the day when a young aspirant can enter an examination hall with the confidence that the paper is secure, the system is fair, merit will be respected and anyone attempting to steal a student’s future will face certain and swift punishment.
The NEET crisis has become a test not only of an examination system but of the nation’s promise to its youth.
The Prime Minister has now given an assurance.
The country’s students, parents and all stakeholders will be watching to see that the assurance becomes action—and action becomes justice.
