NEW DELHI, OCT 16

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an explanation from Gujarat authorities over the alleged brutal assault and sexual violence against a woman in Surendranagar district, reportedly after her husband and family members objected to her living with another man.

Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report on the incident, the Commission has issued notices to the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, Surendranagar, directing them to submit a detailed report within two weeks. The report is expected to cover the victim’s health condition and whether any compensation has been paid to her.

According to the media report, the woman and the man she was living with were allegedly traced and brought back under the pretext of conducting a “purification ritual”. The woman was reportedly beaten with sticks, kicked and tied to a tree. The report further alleged that the accused forced the man accompanying her to rape her.

Observing that the reported incident, if true, raises serious human rights concerns, the NHRC has sought a detailed account from the district authorities.

The incident reportedly came to light after a video of the alleged assault circulated on social media. The media report was published on October 8, 2026.

The Commission’s intervention puts the focus on the victim’s immediate medical needs, the authorities’ response and the question of compensation, alongside the need to establish the facts through an appropriate investigation
