CHENNAI, JUNE 29

In a heartwarming blend of environmental action and social inclusion, the Southern Railway Women’s Headquarters Organisation (SRWHQO) organised a vibrant tree plantation drive at Ashraya School for Special Children in Perambur, reaffirming its commitment to sustainability, community engagement and the empowerment of differently-abled children.

  • Initiative nurtures both a greener environment and the spirit of self-reliance among special children

Held under the leadership of Sonia Singh, President, SRWHQO, the initiative transformed the school campus into a celebration of nature and green living. The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, teachers, staff and members of SRWHQO, including Charu Gupta, Vice-President; Tina Rajpal, Secretary; and Hasana Meena, Treasurer.

As part of the drive, a variety of fruit-bearing saplings such as guava, chikoo, sweet lime and pomegranate were planted, while more than 200 flowering saplings, including jasmine, coral jasmine and hibiscus, were distributed among students and staff. The initiative aimed to encourage tree planting, foster environmental responsibility and strengthen the bond between communities and nature.

Addressing the gathering, Sonia Singh, President, SRWHQO, encouraged the children to become guardians of the environment and urged them to “plant more trees and nurture the saplings gifted to them with care and responsibility.”

The students of Ashraya participated with remarkable enthusiasm, turning the programme into a meaningful lesson in environmental stewardship. A similar plantation initiative was also organised at the Blossom Crèche & Day Care Centre, another institution managed by SRWHQO, extending the green movement to younger children as well.

The event concluded on a cheerful note with the distribution of snacks to students, teachers and staff, adding warmth to a day dedicated to environmental consciousness.

Established on February 8, 1993, Ashraya is a unique school-cum-vocational training centre dedicated exclusively to special children. Through its Individualised Educational Programme (IEP), the institution equips students with academic knowledge, self-help skills, vocational training and life skills that foster independence and self-reliance.

Students are trained in activities such as making envelopes, paper bags, phenyl, diyas and candles, while also excelling in computer education, sports, arts and crafts. The institution stands as a shining example of how inclusive education, coupled with the right environment and guidance, can unlock extraordinary potential.

The plantation drive underscored an important message: every sapling planted today is an investment in a greener tomorrow, and every child empowered today is a step towards a more inclusive future.
