Post office after office hours, grievance redressal on the clock: Chennai postal services get a public-facing push

NE BUSINESS BUREAU
CHENNAI, OCT 5

For Chennai’s late-working citizens, traders and bulk mailers, the post office is staying open longer; for customers with unresolved postal grievances, the Department of Posts is opening another window for redressal. In a twin public-service initiative, booking counters at Chennai Park Town Head Post Office and Anna Nagar Post Office will function up to 10 pm on all working days, while Chennai City Central Postal Division will conduct a Divisional Level Dak Adalat on October 12.

  • Park Town and Anna Nagar post offices to keep booking counters open till 10 pm
  • Domestic and international Speed Post and parcel booking available during extended hours
  • Chennai City Central Division to hold Dak Adalat on October 12
  • Customers can submit unresolved grievances by post until October 9
  • Only complaints already raised at lower-level post offices will be entertained
  • Dak Adalat covers 24 post offices across key Chennai neighbourhoods

The extended booking-counter facility and the grievance-redressal forum together seek to make postal services more accessible while providing customers with a formal channel to pursue complaints that remain unresolved at the lower levels of the postal administration.

Two post offices to serve customers till 10 pm

For the convenience of the public and customers, the Department of Posts has extended the working hours of booking counters at Chennai Park Town Head Post Office (Chennai–600003) and Anna Nagar Post Office (Chennai–600040) up to 10 pm on all working days.

Importantly, the extended hours are not restricted to a limited category of mail.

Customers will be able to avail themselves of full booking facilities for domestic and international Speed Post services as well as postal parcel services during the extended operating hours.

The Department of Posts has encouraged the general public, trade entities and bulk customers to make optimal use of the extended counter facilities for their mailing and dispatch requirements.

For businesses and individuals working beyond conventional office hours, the move could provide greater flexibility in sending time-sensitive documents, parcels and commercial consignments.

Dak Adalat on October 12

Meanwhile, Chennai City Central Postal Division will conduct its Divisional Level Dak Adalat at 11 am on October 12, 2026, at the Office of the Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Chennai City Central Division, Chennai–600017.

Customers residing under Chennai City Central Division can submit their complaints to the Senior Superintendent of Post Offices on or before October 9, 2026.

The complaints must be sent exclusively through Ordinary Post or Registered Post, clearly superscribed “Division Dak Adalat”.

Complaints sent through private couriers will not be accepted.

No fresh complaints at the Adalat

The Department of Posts has laid down an important condition for participation.

The Dak Adalat will entertain only un-redressed grievances that have previously been represented at lower-level post offices. Fresh complaints will not be taken up at the Dak Adalat.

For complaints relating to postal articles, customers must provide complete particulars, including the date of posting, full name and address of the sender and addressee, and booking receipt number.

For complaints relating to Savings Schemes, Postal Life Insurance (PLI) or Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI), the submission must contain the relevant account or policy number, depositor or insured details and branch name.

The requirement is intended to enable the postal authorities to trace the transaction or account and examine the grievance with the necessary records.

Two initiatives, one customer-centric message

The twin measures underline two different but complementary aspects of public postal service—accessibility and accountability.

While the extended booking hours give customers and businesses more time to access essential postal services, the Dak Adalat provides an opportunity for customers whose earlier complaints remain unresolved to seek further redressal through the divisional-level mechanism.

For Chennai’s residents, traders and institutional users, the message is clear: the postal counter is staying open longer, while the grievance window is also being formally opened for unresolved cases.
