Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his 151st birth anniversary and said there is much to learn from his life and thoughts.

The 151st anniversary is a good occasion to think through our priorities in the light of Gandhiji’s life and thought, and prepare ourselves again to hear his voice in our hearts.

May Bapu’s ideals keep guiding us in creating a prosperous and compassionate India, he said.

“We bow to beloved Bapu on Gandhi Jayanti. There is much to learn from his life and noble thoughts. May Bapu”s ideals keep guiding us in creating a prosperous and compassionate India,” the prime minister tweeted.

He also posted a short clip of his remarks on the father of the nation.

Gandhi was born on this day in 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat.

President Kovind was accompanied by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as they paid tributes at Shastri’s memorial at Vijay Ghat.

An interfaith prayer was held and Mahatma Gandhi’s favourite bhajans “Vaishanv Jan To” and “Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram” were rendered as dignitaries paid homage at his memorial at Rajghat.

Union ministers Hardeep Singh Puri and Gajendra Singh Shekahawt, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad were among others who paid homage to the father of the nation at Rajghat.

“I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent”

These sagacious words of #MahatmaGandhi continue to remain relevant today in a world increasingly affected by strife and violence.#InternationalDayOfNonViolence pic.twitter.com/dwZAO473Q2
