The incessant rain that occurred in many parts of Tamil Nadu resulted the death of 5 persons on Tuesday, said State Revenue and Disaster Management Minister KKSSR Ramachandran.
He told reporters that 538 huts were damaged and four houses fully damaged. The situation will become worse if rain intensifies further, the minister said.
Chennai and its suburban areas have experienced heavy rain for the past two days, leading to inundation of many low-lying areas and had resulted in opening up of sluice gates of three city reservoirs – Poondi, Chembarambakkam, and Puzhal – that are the main sources for drinking water needs of the metropolis.

The average rainfall of the state during the last 24 hours was 16.84 mm, while Chengalpet district receiving the highest.
Tamil Nadu and the neighbouring Union Territory of Puducherry received an excess rainfall of 43 percent since the beginning of North-East monsoon in October, official sources said.
IMD predicts extremely heavy rainfall on November 10, 11
Meanwhile, the IMD on Monday has predicted an extremely heavy or very heavy rainfall likely over some parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh on November 10 and 11 which may inundate roads and low-lying areas, and cause riverine flooding in some catchment areas.
An upper cyclonic circulation lies over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining south Andaman Sea extending up to middle tropospheric levels. Under its influence, a low pressure area is very likely to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal and neighborhood during the next 24 hours, the IMD said.
CM Stalin inspects inundated areas for the 3rd day; overseas relief measures
Chief Minister M K Stalin inspected several inundated areas in Chennai along with top officials, including Chief Secretary V Irai Anbu and directed authorities to take swift action to drain flood water for the third day on Tuesday.
The Chief Minister and his cabinet colleagues distributed flood assistance, including rice, milk and blankets to people in affected areas, housed in temporary shelters in Chennai. He directed officials to expedite rescue and relief work.
The government declared holiday for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpet districts on November 8 and 9. Districts like Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Tiruvarur, Villupuram, Erode, Karur, Cuddalore, Pudukottai, Perambalur received more than 60 percent of normal rainfall (during the season), Stalin said.
Meanwhile, the State Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan directed the district collectors to conduct health camps to check water-borne diseases and said that 416 mobile medical units and 770 jeep-borne units have been deployed for the exercise across the state.
State Medical and Health Minister Ma Subramanian said that the Health Department is running mobile health clinics across the state, while mobile ambulances have also been deployed in all the districts. “We are closely monitoring if people are getting infected by any rain-related diseases. The Covid-19 situation is also being closely monitored,” he added.
