Rear Admiral Sritanu Guru on Saturday assumed charge as the Flag Officer, Gujarat, Daman and Diu Naval Area (FOGNA) from Rear Admiral Sathish Vasudev, Nao Sena Medal, during an impressive ceremonial parade held at Porbandar. With this appointment, Rear Admiral Guru becomes the ninth Flag Officer Commanding the strategically vital maritime region.

A specialist in anti-submarine warfare, Rear Admiral Guru brings with him more than three decades of distinguished naval service. Over his illustrious career, he has commanded frontline Indian Naval ships — Astravahini, Ajay, Kuthar, and Mysore — and has held several key operational and staff appointments both at sea and ashore. His shore tenures include pivotal roles at the Directorate of Naval Plans, Naval Headquarters, and as Naval Assistant to the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command.

Before taking over as FOGNA, the officer served as Commodore (Training) at Headquarters, Southern Naval Command, where he played a crucial role in shaping the Navy’s training and professional development frameworks.

An alumnus of the Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehradun, and National Defence Academy (NDA), Pune, Rear Admiral Guru has also pursued advanced military education at the Japan Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) Staff College, Tokyo, the Naval War College, Goa, and the National Defence College (NDC), New Delhi.

The Indian Navy accords high strategic importance to Gujarat, given its long coastline, crucial maritime infrastructure, and its role in India’s economic and security matrix. The FOGNA’s responsibilities include oversight of all naval operations, coastal security coordination, and inter-agency synergy across Gujarat, Daman, and Diu under the Western Naval Command.

Rear Admiral Guru’s appointment underscores the Navy’s continued focus on enhancing maritime vigilance, operational readiness, and coastal security in India’s western seaboard.
