CHENNAI, JULY 19

Every kilometre begins with a single step—but every step towards fitness can change a life. At a time when sedentary lifestyles, stress and lifestyle disorders are becoming increasingly common among young Indians, more than 7,000 runners transformed Chennai into a vibrant celebration of health, endurance and human resilience. The 15th Hexaware Dream Runners Half Marathon 2026 was far more than a sporting spectacle—it emerged as a powerful movement encouraging youngsters to lace up their shoes, embrace running as a lifelong habit and discover that the greatest victory is not crossing the finish line, but choosing a healthier, happier and more disciplined way of life.

  • 15th edition inspires youth to embrace running as a lifelong habit for better health, mental wellness and disciplined living
  • Thousands conquer the scenic Marina route, proving that endurance, determination and community spirit can transform lives
  • Race champions fitness with a purpose by supporting amputees, burn survivors and persons with intellectual disabilities
  • Plogging, zero food wastage and sustainable event management reinforce the message that a healthy nation begins with healthy citizens and a healthy planet
  • Dream Runners once again blend adventure sports, social responsibility and environmental stewardship into South India’s premier running festival

More than 7,000 runners from across the country participated in the 15th edition of the Hexaware Dream Runners Half Marathon 2026, making it one of South India’s biggest celebrations of fitness, endurance, adventure sports and community participation.

The event witnessed overwhelming enthusiasm across both competitive categories, reaffirming Chennai’s growing reputation as one of India’s leading destinations for long-distance running and healthy living.

The prestigious 21.1-km Half Marathon commenced at 4.30 a.m. from the iconic Napiers Bridge and was flagged off by P. Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, T. Nagar District, Greater Chennai City Police (GCCP). More than 2,500 runners tested their endurance in the half-marathon category.

The 10-km race, which attracted over 4,500 participants, began at 5.15 a.m. from the same venue and was flagged off by K. Bhavaneeswari, Inspector General of Police, Singapenn Special Force.

Participants ran through one of Chennai’s most picturesque routes, covering Napiers Bridge, Marina Beach, Santhome High Road, Adyar and Besant Avenue before finishing at Island Grounds, cheered throughout by enthusiastic volunteers and spectators.

Running: The Simplest Adventure Sport for Lifelong Fitness

Beyond medals and podium finishes, the marathon carried a larger public health message—running remains one of the most accessible and effective forms of exercise for improving cardiovascular health, strengthening muscles and bones, enhancing lung capacity, reducing stress and promoting mental well-being.

Organisers emphasised that cultivating the habit of regular running among children and young adults can significantly reduce lifestyle diseases while nurturing qualities such as discipline, perseverance, resilience and self-confidence.

Adventure sports like distance running also encourage participants to push personal boundaries, overcome challenges and develop a positive outlook towards life.

Celebrating Sporting Excellence

Ahead of race day, the Race Expo held at R.K. Convention Centre, Neelankarai, enabled registered participants to collect race bibs and event kits.

During the Expo, Olympian, former Indian Hockey captain and coach Vasudevan Bhaskaran was felicitated for his immense contribution to Indian hockey and Tamil Nadu’s sporting ecosystem.

Organised by Dream Runners, one of Chennai’s largest running communities with 13 chapters across the city, the marathon once again showcased the organisation’s commitment to building a vibrant fitness culture.

Fitness with Compassion

The marathon also demonstrated that sporting events can become powerful platforms for social transformation.

Continuing its longstanding tradition of community service, the event supported three noble causes:

  • Providing prosthetic limbs to amputees through Freedom Trust.
  • Supplying pressure garments to women survivors of burns and acid attacks through PCVC.
  • Supporting persons with intellectual disabilities through Vijay Human Services.

Running for a Greener Tomorrow

The organisers also reinforced their environmental commitment through Plogging initiatives and zero food wastage, proving that major sporting events can promote sustainability alongside athletic excellence.

The marathon successfully blended fitness, environmental consciousness and social responsibility into one inspiring community celebration.
