For the Cauvery delta, a new railway journey has begun—with the whistle of the Tuticorin–Narasapur Special Express opening a direct rail corridor to the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh and turning a long-standing passenger demand into a weekly reality.

The inaugural run of the special train received a warm and festive welcome at Kumbakonam on Tuesday morning, where railway users, traders and members of the Arya Vysya community gathered to greet the service with floral petals and sweets. For passengers across the delta region, the train represents more than another timetable entry—it is a new east-coast connection linking southern Tamil Nadu with coastal Andhra Pradesh through a single direct service.

  • Weekly special stitches together the Cauvery delta, Chennai and coastal Andhra Pradesh
  • Kumbakonam passengers roll out a floral welcome as first service arrives
  • Direct connectivity brings fresh rail access to Narasapur and pilgrimage destinations
  • Arya Vysya community hails new link to Sri Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari temple
  • Users seek early regularisation of the only direct rail link between southern Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra

Responding to the demand for better connectivity between the Cauvery delta and Andhra’s coastal districts, Southern Railway has introduced the weekly special service between Tuticorin and Narasapur, passing through Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Mayiladuthurai, Chennai Egmore, Vijayawada and Bhimavaram Town.

A new rail bridge between two regions

The significance of the service is particularly strong for passengers from Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai and the wider Cauvery delta, who now have a direct rail option towards coastal Andhra Pradesh without the need to piece together multiple train journeys.

Train No. 06019 Tuticorin–Narasapur Special Express departs Tuticorin at 11.30 pm every Monday, reaching Thanjavur at 6.26 am and Kumbakonam at 6.58 am the following day.

From Kumbakonam, the train proceeds towards Narasapur through Villupuram, Chennai Egmore, Nellore, Ongole, Tenali, Vijayawada and Bhimavaram Town, reaching its destination at 12.20 am on Wednesday.

The return service, Train No. 06020 Narasapur–Tuticorin Special Express, departs Narasapur at 4 am on Wednesdays, reaching Kumbakonam at 8.18 pm and Thanjavur at 9.18 pm the same day.

It then proceeds through Tiruchirappalli and Madurai, reaching Tuticorin at 4.30 am on Thursday.

When a train carries faith along with passengers

For the Arya Vysya community, the new service has an added spiritual significance.

The direct train brings passengers closer to Penukonda, associated with the revered Sri Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari temple, giving devotees from the southern and central parts of Tamil Nadu a more convenient rail option for undertaking the pilgrimage.

That religious connectivity added an emotional dimension to the Kumbakonam reception, with members of the Arya Vysya Samajam joining railway-user and trade bodies in welcoming the first service.

The occasion demonstrated how a railway route can simultaneously serve commerce, tourism, pilgrimage and family mobility, strengthening social and economic links between regions separated by state borders.

Kumbakonam rolls out the red carpet

The first run reached Kumbakonam at 6.58 am, where members of the Thanjavur District Railway Users Association (TANDRUA), Federation of Kumbakonam All Industrial and Traders Associations and Arya Vysya Samajam gathered to welcome the train.

Floral petals were showered on the arriving service, while sweets were distributed among passengers.

Loco pilots Jothi Pandiyan and Vivek were honoured with shawls to mark the inaugural run.

Among those present were M Maran, Vice-President, and Deepak Venkatesh, Executive Committee Member, TANDRUA; V. Sathiyanarayanan, Secretary, Federation of Kumbakonam All Industrial and Traders Associations; and Kotha Sudarsun of Arya Vysya Samajam.

The reception underscored the strong public interest in the new connection and the expectation that it will evolve from a special service into a permanent fixture on the railway map.

The next destination: regular service

While passengers welcomed the new service, their celebration came with a clear message to Southern Railway: make the connection permanent.

Passenger representatives pointed out that the Tuticorin–Narasapur service is currently the only direct train connecting the southern and central regions of Tamil Nadu with coastal Andhra Pradesh.

They have therefore demanded that the weekly special be converted into a regular train at the earliest, arguing that sustained connectivity would benefit passengers, traders, students, pilgrims and other sections travelling between the two regions.

The first run may have been welcomed with petals and sweets at Kumbakonam, but the larger passenger message is already steaming ahead: a route that answers a genuine connectivity need should not remain special for long.
