NEW DELHI, DECEMBER 3

Rajya Sabha MP and former Bollywood actress Jaya Bachchan  has demanding that the accused involved in the gangrape and murder of a 27-year-old veterinarian  on the outskirts of Hyderabad  be “brought out in public and lynched”. Cutting across party lines, all Parliamentarians sought harshest punishment to the culprits.

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind(JIH) , a socio-cultural organization and Students Organisation of India (SIO) also strongly condemned the incident, describing it a heinous crime and said that exemplary punishment be given to the accused to teach a lesson so that such incidents were not repeated in future.

Paritcipating in a debate on the issue in Rajya Sabha, Jaya Bachchan said that though her demand is very harsh but said that “such people (the accused in the rape case) be lynched”.

Jaya Bachchan is very sensitive on the issue of women and has always fought for women’s right.

The 27-year-old veterinarian was not only gangraped and murdered but her body was also burnt to destroy evidence.

Hyderabad police have arrested four persons in this connection.

Jaya Bachchan asked the government to give a proper answer to what it was going to do to provide protection and safety to the women.

Stating that the country is not safe for women and children, AIADMK MP from Tamil Nadu Vijila Sathyananth, taking part in discussion on the issue in Parliament, demanded that the four accused be hanged to death before December 31.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, condemning the Hyderabad incident, said that it was hoped that tougher laws introduced in the country after gangrape and murder of a woman in 2012 in Delhi would provide safety to women. But it has not happened. He said that the government was ready to hold a discussion on the issue and make the rape laws more stringent to ensure safety of women in the country.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also expressed shock over the brutal rape and murder.  “How anyone could subject another human being to such terrible, unprovoked violence is beyond imagination,” he said.

JIH vice-president Engineer Mohammad Salim said that apart from giving severe punishment to the accused in rape cases, an awareness drive be also launched by various socio-cultural, religious as also political organisations about crime against women.

Demanding swift justice against the accused in the case, SIO president Labeed Shafi said that steps must be initiated to change the criminal mentality of such people and only then safety and security of women could be ensured. SIO also held demonstrations at different places in the country against the incident.

Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) on Saturday also organised a demonstration in the university campus to demand justice for the vet.

Meanwhile, National Commission for Women (NCW) Rekha Sharma has announced that NCW had set up a committee to investigate the issue.
