Hundreds of people from all faiths celebrated Christmas at mid-sea near Colachel in Kanniyakumari district, Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.
The celebrations was organised by the South Asian Fishermen Fraternity (SAFF), says a release from its general secretary Fr. Churchil.
Fishermen assembled in mid-sea near Colachel on Wednesday morning in mechanised fishing boats and trawlers, fibre boats and country boats with their kith and kin for the celebrations. They sailed to the sea from Colachel fishing harbour carrying men, women and children from fishermen community belonging to different faiths.
A mechanised boat Halleluyah owned by Fisherman Rexon was decorated with crib to Infant Jesus.
Such a celebration was held to recognise the seas importance in ensuring them their livelihood, they said.
Speaking on this occasion, Fr. Peter Ladies, President, SAFF and Professor, Law University, Patna, Bihar appreciated participation of people from different faiths.
Maheen Abhubakar, President, Popular Front of India, Kanyakuari; Abdul Jaffer, President, SDPI – Kanyakumari took part in the celebrations as special guests.
Maheen Abhubakar expressed his pleasure to show the world the unity and brotherhood among the people belonging to different faiths.
Christmas was celebrated with cake cutting by children from different faiths.
The sea near Colachel was filled with colours of decorated mechanized boats and crafts. Children and youth danced with joy, the release said.
