MUMBAI, JAN 14

Captain Virat Kohli set a record, as he became the 1st Indian skipper to taste a 10-wicket defeat against Australia in ODI cricket.

India suffered their 1st-ever 10-wicket defeat to Australia and the visitors clinched only their 5th 10-wicket win in ODI cricket on Tuesday in Mumbai.

David Warner and Aaron Finch remained unbeaten after hitting a hundred each as Australia gunned down a 256-run target as early as the 38th over. This is also the 2nd highest target chased in ODI cricket without losing a wicket.

South Africa hold the record for the highest target chased without losing a wicket when they gunned down 279 against Bangladesh in 2017.

It was one-way traffic in Mumbai as David Warner and Aaron Finch took the Indian bowlers to the cleaners in their chase. Warner and Finch also set the record for highest partnership for any wicket against India in ODIs (258) as they went past the previous record (242) set by Steve Smith and George Bailey in 2016.

India slump to 4th successive loss to Australia at home

This was also India’s 4th successive loss to Australia in ODIs at home. Notably, Aaron Finch’s men had overturned a 2-0 deficit to win a 5-match series 3-2 in 2019 in India.

It was also India’s 3rd successive loss in ODIs at the Wankhede Stadium after a 214-run loss to South Africa in 2015 and 6-wicket loss to New Zealand in 2017.

India’s premium fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah had an off day as he was taken to the cleaners by both Finch and Warner. Bumrah went wicketless after conceding 50 runs in just 7 overs. Mohammed Shami looked ordinary as well as he finished with figures of 0 for 58 in 7.4 overs.

Earlier in the day, India were bowled out for 255 after a disciplined bowling effort by Australia who were playing their 1st ODI since the semi-final exit at 2019 World Cup.

Mitchell Starc was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets while Pat Cummins and Kane Richardson picked up 2 wickets each.

India had a 100-plus stand for the 2nd wicket between Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul but they lost wickets at regular intervals to crash to a below-par score on a good batting strip.

India lost their last 9 wickets for 121 runs as they slipped from 134 for 1 to 255-all out. Captain Virat Kohli’s experiment to bat at No. 4 failed as the Indian skipper was caught and bowled by Adam Zampa for just 16.
