CHENNAI, JULY 5

At a time when millions across the world continue to suffer from avoidable blindness despite rapid advances in medical science, Chennai became the global capital of ophthalmology on Saturday as more than 2,000 eye specialists from India and abroad assembled to script the next chapter in vision care.

The two-day Indian Intraocular Implant & Refractive Surgery Convention (IIRSI) 2026, India’s premier scientific conference on eye surgery, was inaugurated by Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, who described India as an emerging global hub for medical innovation and excellence.

  • Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar says India is emerging as a global powerhouse in medical innovation and ophthalmic excellence
  • IIRSI 2026 brings together over 2,000 eye specialists, 250 global faculty members and 500-plus scientific sessions to shape the next era of vision care
  • Artificial intelligence, advanced refractive surgery, cataract innovations, retina, cornea and myopia management dominate scientific deliberations
  • Experts stress collaboration, continuous learning and surgical excellence as the world’s burden of preventable blindness continues to rise

The convention, the flagship annual event of the Intraocular Implant & Refractive Society of India, has drawn over 2,000 ophthalmologists, surgeons, researchers and eye-care professionals from across the globe. With more than 250 speakers, over 500 scientific presentations and nine specialised wet-lab sessions, the conference has evolved into one of the world’s most influential platforms dedicated to restoring sight and advancing ophthalmic science.

Beyond showcasing technological breakthroughs, the convention sends a powerful message: preventable blindness remains one of the world’s biggest public health challenges, but innovation, collaboration and timely intervention can dramatically change that reality.

According to the World Health Organization>, at least 2.2 billion people worldwide live with near or distance vision impairment, and nearly half of these cases could have been prevented or have yet to be addressed, underscoring the urgent need for stronger eye-care systems and continuous surgical innovation.

‘India is becoming a global leader in ophthalmology’

In his inaugural address, Governor Arlekar highlighted India’s growing stature in healthcare and medical research.

“India has emerged as an important hub for medical innovation and excellence, and forums such as the IIRSI Convention further strengthen this position. Tamil Nadu, in particular, has distinguished itself as a leader in healthcare delivery and medical education, with its institutions making significant contributions to advancing ophthalmic care and research.”

He added:

“Bringing together leading experts from across the world, the convention provides an invaluable platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and professional growth. The sharing of expertise and experiences at such gatherings will undoubtedly help advance ophthalmic care and benefit countless patients in India and beyond.”

The Future of Eye Care is Being Written Today

The scientific programme spans virtually every major subspecialty in modern ophthalmology, including cataract surgery, refractive surgery, corneal disorders, retinal diseases, paediatric ophthalmology, comprehensive eye care and the rapidly escalating global challenge of myopia.

Participants are witnessing live surgical demonstrations, international faculty lectures, complex case discussions and technology showcases, besides engaging in practical wet-lab training designed to sharpen surgical precision and improve patient safety.

One of the convention’s most innovative additions is BAdS@IIRSI, a first-of-its-kind platform that brings clinicians and healthcare industry leaders together to discuss not only surgical advances but also business strategy, technology adoption and the future of ophthalmic practice.

Equally noteworthy is the Ophthalmic Premier League (Mohan Rajan OPL Trophy), where teams compete by presenting complex surgical cases, managing complications and undergoing real-time expert evaluation—an initiative aimed at elevating surgical excellence through peer learning.

The convention also encourages young researchers through abstract presentations and the IIRSI Ophthalmic Photography Competition, reinforcing the role of innovation, documentation and scientific inquiry in advancing patient care.

Collaboration is the New Cure

Jeewan Singh Titiyal, President of IIRSI and the All India Ophthalmological Society, emphasised that the future of ophthalmology lies in collective learning rather than isolated excellence.

“The future of eye care lies in collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning. Bringing together distinguished experts and emerging professionals from across the globe, this convention serves as a powerful catalyst for scientific exchange and surgical excellence. Such interactions strengthen our collective ability to deliver safer, more advanced, and more accessible vision care to millions of people.”

Echoing this vision, Prof Amar Agarwal, Secretary General of IIRSI and Chairman of Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, said the convention reflects India’s rising global influence in eye-care innovation.

“The IIRSI Convention continues to serve as a premier forum where the finest minds in ophthalmology converge to exchange ideas, showcase innovations, and advance the science of eye care.”

He further observed:

“The diversity and scale of participation this year reflect the growing global recognition of India’s contributions to ophthalmic surgery and research. Through scientific sessions, live surgeries, hands-on training, and interactions with international experts, we aim to empower ophthalmologists with new knowledge and skills that translate into better patient outcomes. Beyond academics, this gathering also strengthens professional networks and fosters collaborations that will shape the future of eye care both in India and across the world.”

A Vision Beyond Surgery

As artificial intelligence, precision diagnostics, robotic assistance and next-generation intraocular implants rapidly reshape ophthalmology, IIRSI 2026 demonstrates that the future of vision care will depend as much on collaboration and lifelong learning as on technological innovation.

More importantly, the convention reiterates a crucial public-health message: most blindness is preventable or treatable when detected early and managed with timely intervention. In that sense, Chennai is not merely hosting another medical conference—it is helping illuminate a future where millions more people can continue to see, learn, work and live with dignity.
