AHMEDABAD, JULY 17
As India’s renewable energy revolution gathers unprecedented momentum, the race to build a robust domestic energy storage ecosystem has entered a decisive new phase. Signalling its intent to lead this transformation, Waaree Energy Storage Solutions (Waaree ESS) has commissioned what it describes as one of India’s most advanced automated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) container manufacturing facilities—an ambitious move set to strengthen the nation’s clean energy ambitions while laying the foundation for a self-reliant energy storage industry.
Waaree Energy Storage Solutions Pvt Ltd (Waaree ESS), a subsidiary of Waaree Energies Ltd, on Friday announced the commencement of its state-of-the-art Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Container Manufacturing Facility, marking the first major milestone in the company’s ambitious 20 GWh integrated manufacturing roadmap.
The new facility has an annual manufacturing capacity of 5.15 GWh, significantly upgraded from the originally planned 3.5 GWh following production debottlenecking initiatives and improvements in battery cell energy density.
Designed for utility-scale as well as commercial and industrial applications, the facility integrates cutting-edge Industry 4.0 technologies, including Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), intelligent material handling systems, automated assembly lines, and advanced testing and quality assurance infrastructure to deliver reliable, scalable and high-performance energy storage solutions.
The commissioning of the BESS container facility marks the first phase of Waaree ESS’s integrated manufacturing strategy. During the current financial year, the company also plans to operationalise:
- 5.15 GWh Battery Pack Manufacturing Facility, upgraded from the originally planned 3.5 GWh through production optimisation and enhanced battery cell energy density.
- 3.5 GWh Lithium Cell Manufacturing Facility, completing a comprehensive domestic manufacturing ecosystem.
Together, these facilities are expected to establish a robust indigenous energy storage value chain, supporting India’s clean energy transition while reducing dependence on imported technologies.
As India rapidly expands its solar and wind power capacity, Battery Energy Storage Systems are becoming indispensable for ensuring uninterrupted, round-the-clock electricity supply. BESS enables surplus renewable energy generated during the day to be stored and dispatched during periods of peak demand, significantly improving grid stability, minimising renewable energy curtailment and reducing reliance on conventional peaking power plants.
Energy storage is increasingly recognised as a critical pillar in achieving India’s renewable energy targets, enhancing national energy security and enabling a resilient, low-carbon electricity ecosystem.
Through the integrated manufacturing of lithium cells, battery packs and BESS containers, Waaree ESS aims to build comprehensive energy storage platforms that support the Government’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives while providing customers with high-quality, locally manufactured solutions backed by faster delivery timelines.
Speaking on the occasion, Sunil Rathi, Director, Waaree, said, “Battery Energy Storage Systems are the backbone of a renewable-powered future. As India accelerates its clean energy transition, reliable and domestically manufactured energy storage will be essential for ensuring grid stability, energy security, and sustainable growth.”
He added, “The commencement of our advanced BESS container manufacturing facility is an important step towards building a fully integrated energy storage ecosystem. With planned capacities of 3.5 GWh lithium cells and 5.15 GWh battery packs, Waaree ESS is committed to delivering world-class, Made-in-India energy storage solutions that empower our customers and contribute to India’s vision of becoming a global clean energy manufacturing hub.”
With its integrated manufacturing roadmap now taking shape, Waaree ESS is positioning itself as a key player in India’s rapidly evolving energy storage landscape, supporting the country’s transition towards a cleaner, smarter and more resilient power infrastructure.
