CHENNAI, OCT 1

The runway is ready. The uniforms are crisp. The minds are alert. And for 646 young NCC cadets, the sky is no longer merely a destination—it is a challenge waiting to be embraced.

The All India Vayu Sainik Camp 2026 has taken off at Air Force Station Tambaram, Chennai, bringing together cadets from 17 NCC Directorates for an intensive national-level encounter with aviation, discipline, leadership, teamwork and military-oriented skills.

The camp, which commenced on September 30, will continue for 14 days until October 13, making this year’s edition longer than the conventional 12-day format. It is also the first time that the prestigious camp is being conducted at Air Force Station Tambaram, an establishment with a long association with the training of Indian Air Force flying instructors.

Inaugurating the camp, Commodore Sudeep Nambiar, Deputy Director General, NCC Directorate of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andaman & Nicobar, underlined the growing opportunities available to NCC cadets aspiring to careers in the Armed Forces.

Nambiar said the national-level mega camp was being conducted in Chennai for the first time and announced that drone training would soon be introduced for NCC cadets at Tiruchengode in Namakkal district, adding a contemporary technology dimension to the organisation’s military-oriented training.

A certificate that can open the officer’s door

For cadets looking beyond the parade ground towards a career in uniform, the NCC’s ‘C’ Certificate can be a significant stepping stone.

Nambiar pointed out that graduates holding the NCC ‘C’ Certificate can appear for interviews for certain officer-entry routes without taking the written examination prescribed for many other candidates, subject to the applicable entry conditions.

Government information has long recognised special opportunities for NCC ‘C’ Certificate holders in officer recruitment, including reserved vacancies and exemption from written examinations for specified entries. Current UPSC documentation also continues to require NCC ‘C’ certificates for candidates claiming such eligibility in defence-service selections.

The significance of the certificate, therefore, extends well beyond a line on a résumé.

It represents training, discipline, endurance and demonstrated commitment—qualities that the NCC seeks to nurture before young people step into the larger world of national service.

From aero-modelling to the firing range

The cadets at Tambaram have not arrived merely to watch aircraft take to the skies.

They have earned their places through competitions and selection processes covering a demanding range of activities, including air operations, health and hygiene, cleanliness, aero-modelling, .22 rifle shooting, skeet shooting, drill, tent pitching and running.

The breadth of the programme reflects the philosophy behind the All India Vayu Sainik Camp: aviation is only one component. The larger objective is to build young people capable of functioning with precision, discipline and confidence in demanding environments.

The 2026 camp is also placing emphasis on flying-related skills, aeromodelling, simulator exposure, firing, drill and tent pitching, alongside theoretical learning connected with aviation and aircraft systems.

For the cadet, every activity becomes a lesson.

Every command tests attention.

Every drill demands synchronisation.

Every competition tests preparation.

And every failure offers another opportunity to improve.

Women cadets get a bigger runway

One of the notable features of this year’s camp is the increased representation of Senior Wing female cadets.

For the first time, the number has been raised to 16 female cadets per Directorate, giving more young women an opportunity to participate in the national-level Air Wing platform.

The move adds another dimension to an institution increasingly seeking to expose young women to military training, aviation-related skills, leadership responsibilities and competitive national platforms.

It is a reminder that the modern military imagination is no longer confined to a traditional template.

The runway is widening.

And so are the ambitions of the cadets standing beside it.

Tambaram: Where tradition meets technology

The choice of Air Force Station Tambaram gives the camp an added sense of history.

The station has been associated with the training of generations of Indian Air Force flying instructors. Now, the same broad aviation environment is exposing a new generation of NCC cadets to the possibilities of air power, technology and service.

The camp is being led by Group Captain K.M. Raghuraman, Group Commander, NCC Group Headquarters (Chennai ‘B’), and his team, with Air Commodore Tapan Sharma, Air Officer Commanding, Air Force Station Tambaram, facilitating arrangements for the event.

The emphasis is firmly on learning by doing.

Discipline. Leadership. Teamwork. Technical skills. Physical fitness. Sportsmanship.

Together, these are intended to transform the camp from a ceremonial gathering into a demanding learning experience.

Drone-age NCC, sky-high aspirations

The proposed drone training at Tiruchengode is particularly significant.

For today’s generation, aerospace is no longer synonymous only with conventional aircraft. Unmanned aerial systems, simulation, aeromodelling, autonomous technologies and remotely operated platforms are rapidly becoming part of the broader aerospace and defence ecosystem.

The NCC’s emphasis on aeromodelling and aviation-related training at national camps already provides cadets with an early exposure to this technological universe. The 2026 camp’s training programme includes aeromodelling and simulator-related activities designed to build technical understanding alongside practical skills.

The message to the young cadet is unmistakable:

Learn to fly—but also learn what makes flight possible.

Where dreams meet discipline

As the cadets line up, fill forms, receive their kits, march past the reviewing officers and listen to words of encouragement from senior commanders, the real significance of the camp lies beyond the ceremonies.

Some may eventually become officers.

Some may enter aviation and aerospace.

Others may carry the habits of discipline, teamwork and leadership into completely different professions.

But for these 646 cadets, Tambaram offers something that cannot be replicated in a classroom—a chance to test themselves against peers from across the country and discover how far preparation, perseverance and teamwork can take them.

The NCC’s official training philosophy similarly places emphasis on discipline, self-confidence, military skills, practical training and preparing cadets to qualify for the ‘C’ Certificate and pursue opportunities in the Armed Forces.

As the All India Vayu Sainik Camp 2026 continues until October 13, the young participants have their own mission: compete hard, learn fast, stand tall and return stronger.

The aircraft may dominate the skies above Tambaram.

But the bigger story is taking shape on the ground.

Young minds are being trained to look upwards, think ahead and aim beyond the horizon.

Because when discipline gives wings to ambition, the sky is not the limit—it is only the beginning.
