What protects life on Earth while remaining largely invisible to the human eye? And what happens when that protective shield is placed under pressure? These questions will take centre stage at Gujarat Science City as around 1,000 students come together on September 16 to observe World Ozone Day 2026, turning a vital atmospheric issue into an interactive lesson in environmental responsibility.
The Gujarat Council of Science City, functioning under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Gujarat, will organise the day-long programme at the Children Activity Centre, Gujarat Science City, Ahmedabad, under the theme “Global Action for Cooler Planet.”
The programme is designed to move beyond textbook explanations of the ozone layer and help students understand why protecting the atmosphere is ultimately about protecting life, health and the planet’s future.
From an invisible shield to a visible responsibility
The ozone layer acts as Earth’s protective shield against harmful ultraviolet radiation. Its protection has consequently become one of the clearest examples of how scientific understanding, international cooperation and responsible human action can produce environmental gains.
Gujarat Science City’s programme seeks to bring that larger environmental message closer to young minds through a combination of science communication, visual learning, games and experiential exploration.
The celebration will commence at 11 am with participant registration, followed by a welcome and introductory session.
A popular science lecture titled “Action for Ozone Protection & Cooler Planet” will explain the importance of the ozone layer, the challenges confronting atmospheric protection and the actions needed to safeguard the planet.
When science becomes an experience
The programme will combine learning with participation.
A special film screening on ozone protection will provide students with a visual perspective on atmospheric science, while the interactive “Explore Ozone” puzzle game, carrying the message “Save Ozone: Save Life,” is expected to turn a complex environmental subject into an engaging challenge.
The students will also visit the various scientific thematic galleries at Gujarat Science City, giving them an opportunity to connect classroom concepts with interactive exhibits and technological demonstrations.
The approach is significant because environmental awareness is more likely to become meaningful when young learners can see, question, explore and experience science, rather than simply memorise environmental facts.
From awareness to action
The programme also seeks to establish an important link between ozone protection and broader climate responsibility.
The theme “Global Action for Cooler Planet” underscores that environmental challenges cannot be addressed by governments or institutions alone. Individual choices, scientific innovation, public awareness and collective action all have roles to play.
Through lectures, films, puzzles and gallery visits, Gujarat Science City aims to encourage students to look at environmental protection not as a distant global issue but as a responsibility that begins with informed citizens.
The day-long celebration will continue until 6 pm, bringing together students from schools and colleges across the region.
