2,000 KMs to hope: SRIHER rebuilds a four-year-old’s future after a devastating road accident

Dr. Ramesh Babu, Professor and Head of Paediatric Urology, and the multidisciplinary surgical team at SRIHER, Chennai, celebrate little "Tara's" remarkable recovery after performing a complex paediatric urethroplasty and pelvic reconstruction. In a heartwarming moment after being pulled back from the jaws of death, Tara beams with joy from her father's shoulders—a powerful symbol of hope restored through medical excellence and a reminder that safer roads can save countless childhoods. – NE photo

CHENNAI, JULY 8

One reckless overtake. One overturned auto-rickshaw. One little girl whose future hung in the balance. Every road accident leaves behind more than twisted metal—it can shatter childhood, devastate families and alter lives forever. Yet, in the face of unimaginable tragedy, extraordinary medical expertise can sometimes rewrite destiny.

  • Groundbreaking paediatric urethroplasty restores normal life to little Tara after catastrophic pelvic trauma threatened lifelong disability
  • SRIHER’s paediatric urology experts perform intricate three-hour reconstruction, preserving urinary control, future motherhood and childhood dreams
  • Miraculous recovery underscores why every road accident is preventable—and why timely specialist care can transform seemingly hopeless cases
  • Doctors urge greater road safety awareness as the case highlights India’s growing expertise in complex paediatric reconstructive urology
  • From a remote Bengal village to Chennai, a family’s 2,000-km journey ends with a second chance at life

That is precisely what unfolded at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER), Chennai, where a multidisciplinary paediatric urology team performed a highly complex urethroplasty and pelvic reconstructive surgery on a four-year-old girl from West Bengal, restoring not only her ability to live normally but also safeguarding her dignity, education, womanhood and future motherhood.

The remarkable case stands as both a compelling reminder of the devastating consequences of unsafe driving and a testament to the life-changing capabilities of modern paediatric reconstructive urology.

A childhood nearly lost on the road

Tara (name changed), the daughter of an auto-rickshaw driver from a remote village in Uttar Dinajpur, West Bengal, was travelling with her parents when a speeding lorry attempted a dangerous overtake.

As her father swerved to avoid a collision, the auto-rickshaw overturned.

While the adults escaped with relatively minor injuries, the four-year-old was trapped beneath the vehicle, suffering devastating pelvic trauma.

Initial treatment at a local hospital addressed fractures in both legs, but doctors soon discovered a far more serious injury. The violent impact had shattered her pelvic bones, completely disrupted the urinary bladder and extensively damaged the urethra, leaving her unable to pass urine naturally. Urine accumulated inside her abdomen, creating a life-threatening emergency.

An emergency drainage tube inserted through her abdomen temporarily saved her life, but surgeons warned that reconstructive surgery carried enormous risks—including permanent urinary incontinence and possible impairment of future childbearing.

A 2,000-Kilometre journey in search of hope

Six months later, refusing to surrender hope, Tara’s parents and uncle travelled more than 2,000 kilometres to Chennai, placing their faith in the specialised Paediatric Urology Department at SRIHER.

For the family, the journey was filled with anxiety.

Would Tara ever urinate normally again?

Would she have to live permanently with tubes?

Would the surgery jeopardise her future as a woman?

Those fears were addressed by Dr. Ramesh Babu, Professor and Head of Paediatric Urology at SRIHER.

“Reconstructing a child’s pelvis after such severe trauma requires extreme precision. The bladder had completely sealed off, and the urethra—the natural passage below the bladder—was extensively damaged. Our primary goal was not just to fix the anatomy, but to preserve her long-term quality of life, her dignity, and her future,” he explained.

Precision surgery that restored a childhood

During an intricate three-hour operation, Dr. Ramesh Babu and his team painstakingly navigated dense scar tissue deep within Tara’s pelvis.

The surgeons successfully reconstructed the damaged connection between the bladder and urethra while preserving the delicate urinary sphincter muscles responsible for continence—an achievement crucial to ensuring she would grow up with normal urinary control.

To protect the delicate repair during healing, the team also created a temporary Mitrofanoff channel, an advanced surgical technique that safely diverted urine away from the reconstructed urinary tract.

Fifteen days later came the moment every parent longs to hear.

Post-operative imaging confirmed complete healing.

For the first time since the accident, Tara passed urine naturally, retained complete bladder control and showed no urinary leakage.

More than a medical success

Today, Tara is preparing for a future that once seemed impossible.

According to Dr. Ramesh Babu, the temporary Mitrofanoff channel will be removed after six months, allowing her to lead an entirely normal life. Equally significant, the reconstructive approach carefully preserved her birth canal, ensuring that the childhood trauma will not affect her future reproductive health.

Instead of spending her childhood in hospitals, Tara can now return to school, play with friends and dream without limitations.

A powerful reminder on road safety

While Tara’s recovery showcases the remarkable progress of modern paediatric reconstructive surgery, her story also delivers an urgent public-health message.

Thousands of families across India continue to suffer life-altering tragedies because of speeding, reckless overtaking and negligent driving.

Doctors emphasise that children require specialised trauma evaluation because their growing bodies respond differently to serious injuries. Early referral to paediatric specialists can prevent lifelong disabilities that were once considered unavoidable.

Equally important, advances in reconstructive paediatric urology now offer hope even in the most devastating injuries, proving that modern medicine can restore both function and quality of life.

Yet, as Tara’s remarkable recovery illustrates, the greatest miracle is preventing such accidents from happening in the first place.

Her 2,000-kilometre journey to Chennai ultimately restored her future.

Safer roads could have ensured she never needed that journey.
