According to AMC deputy commissioner Riddhesh Raval, nearly 30% of the 96,000 sq m government land surrounding the lake — about 28,800 sq m — has been encroached upon over the years.
The civic body had already razed 167 commercial structures before Diwali, and Monday’s operation targets 925 illegal residential constructions.
“We issued notices twice and engaged with the residents to prevent friction. Documents from eligible residents have also been collected so they may be included in future housing schemes,” Raval said.
To maintain order during the drive, over 500 police personnel have been deployed, supported by drone surveillance. Zone 6 Deputy Commissioner of Police Bhagirathsinh Gadhvi said the operation began early in the morning and several structures had already been demolished by afternoon.
He added that officials had held multiple meetings with affected families over the past week. “Nearly 80% of residents shifted with their belongings in the last seven days, and the remaining are moving out today,” he said.
The clearance is expected to take two to three days.
This is Ahmedabad’s second major anti-encroachment drive this year, following the clearance of around 1.25 lakh sq m of encroached land near Chandola lake in Danilimda in April.
