CHENNAI, DEC 30
Southern Railway is set to roll out one of its most comprehensive and transformative Time Table revisions in recent years, with the new Time Table coming into force from January 1, 2026. The sweeping overhaul marks a decisive leap towards faster, more reliable and passenger-friendly rail operations across the southern region.
- Biggest Time Table Revamp Signals Faster Trains, Better Connectivity Across South India
- 8 New Trains, 4 Extensions and 100+ Experimental Stoppages Redraw the Rail Map
- 79 Trains to Run Faster as Southern Railway Pushes Speed Revolution
- Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat and MEMU Services Gain Major Boost
- Infrastructure Upgrades Power Faster Mail, Express and Passenger Services
- Passenger-Centric Planning Anchors the 2026 Time Table Transformation
Backed by dedicated maintenance blocks, extensive track upgrades, signalling improvements and infrastructure modernisation, the revised schedule significantly enhances the average speed and efficiency of Mail, Express, Superfast and Passenger trains, reaffirming Indian Railways’ commitment to time-bound, high-quality travel.
New Trains and Network Expansion Take Centre Stage
As part of the revision, eight new trains have been introduced, including Vande Bharat Express, Amrit Bharat Express, MEMU and long-distance Express services, strengthening inter-state and intra-regional connectivity. Notable introductions include services linking Tambaram–Rameswaram, Erode–Jogbani, Bengaluru–Ernakulam (Vande Bharat) and key MEMU corridors.
Additionally, four existing trains have been extended to new destinations, expanding reach to pilgrimage, tourism and regional hubs such as Rameswaram, Subramanya Road and Narasapur.
Speed Revolution: 79 Trains to Get Faster
A defining feature of the new Time Table is the speeding up of 79 trains, comprising:
- 22 trains already speeded up during 2025, and
- 65 Mail/Express/Superfast trains and 14 Passenger trains to be speeded up from January 1, 2026.
Several long-haul services will see journey time reductions of up to 85 minutes, significantly improving end-to-end travel efficiency and punctuality.
Massive Rationalisation of Train Operations
The revision also brings in systematic rationalisation to streamline operations:
- Change in days of service for 8 trains
- Renumbering of 44 Express, Superfast and Passenger trains to align with national numbering protocols
- 102 Express trains provided with experimental stoppages at stations across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka, improving last-mile accessibility
Capacity Boost: Longer, Safer and Modern Trains
Southern Railway has also undertaken large-scale capacity augmentation:
- 7 Vande Bharat Express trains permanently augmented with 40 additional coaches in 2025
- 46 Express trains and 27 Passenger trains strengthened with 62 additional coaches
- LHB conversion of 25 pairs of Express trains (29 rakes), enhancing safety, ride quality and speed potential
These upgrades position Southern Railway firmly on the path of modern, high-capacity rail mobility.
Infrastructure-Led Transformation Powers the New Schedule
Officials said the improved timings are the result of sustained investment in track geometry correction, elimination of speed restrictions, enhanced maintenance regimes and signalling upgrades, allowing trains to safely operate at higher sectional speeds.
The revised Time Table integrates new trains, faster schedules, additional stoppages, extensions and coach augmentations, making it one of the most passenger-centric updates in recent years.
A Passenger-First Rail Future
With the 2026 Time Table, Southern Railway delivers a holistic upgrade—balancing speed, safety, comfort and connectivity. From Vande Bharat acceleration to MEMU expansion and long-distance express rationalisation, the overhaul reflects a strategic shift towards time-sensitive, high-density rail operations tailored to the needs of modern India.
