With the clock ticking toward a high-voltage electoral season, the Election Commission of India has sent out a clear, uncompromising message: elections will be clean, coordinated and tightly policed.
Chairing a crucial inter-state border review meeting, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners S. S. Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, brought together top bureaucratic and law enforcement leadership from five poll-bound states/UTs and 12 neighbouring regions to fine-tune preparedness.

CEC Gyanesh Kumar said: “Our commitment is unequivocal—every voter must feel secure, every vote must be free. There will be zero tolerance for violence, intimidation or inducements.”
Borders Under Watch, Coordination in Focus
The Commission placed special emphasis on sealing inter-state borders, particularly in sensitive districts, to prevent cross-border movement of illicit materials and elements that could disrupt polling.
ECI Directive: “Neighbouring states must act as equal partners in ensuring peaceful elections, with seamless coordination and real-time intelligence sharing.”
Chief Secretaries, DGPs, Home and Excise officials, along with State Police Nodal Officers and seizure tracking teams, presented ground-level inputs on law and order, enforcement challenges and readiness.
Multi-Agency Crackdown Mode Activated
In parallel, the Commission engaged with the Multi-Departmental Committee on Election Intelligence (MDCEI), aligning enforcement strategies with agencies including CBDT, CBIC, ED, DRI, FIU-IND, RBI, NCB and central armed police forces.
ECI to Enforcement Agencies: “Maximise actionable intelligence. Intensify seizures of illegal cash, liquor, narcotics and arms in the run-up to polls.”
Enhanced vigilance has been mandated across airports, ports, railways and postal networks, with tighter scrutiny at inter-state check posts.
Poll Timeline & Ground Action
Polling will be held in Assam, Kerala and Puducherry on April 9; Tamil Nadu on April 23; while West Bengal will vote in two phases on April 23 and 29. Counting is scheduled for May 4.
The Commission has also stepped up micro-level preparedness, including a recent review-cum-training session with district officials in West Bengal and the removal of 73 Returning Officers to reinforce administrative neutrality.
