The Genesis: Where It All Began
The story of railways in the South dates back to 1856, when the first train journey from Royapuram to Arcot (Walajah Road) marked a defining moment in India’s transport history. Over time, the network expanded across present-day Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, linking ports, trade hubs and hinterlands.

Today, it operates over 5,100 route kilometres with six major divisions—Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchchirappalli, Salem, Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram—serving millions daily.
Heritage That Defines Identity
The zone is home to iconic landmarks including Chennai Central railway station, Chennai Egmore railway station, the historic Royapuram railway station and the century-old Southern Railway Headquarters.
Engineering feats like the Pamban Bridge—now upgraded with India’s first vertical lift railway sea bridge inaugurated in 2025—underscore its legacy of innovation.
