Ahmedabad civic chief Vijay Nehra hopes the infection will be brought under control by May
Even as the number of COVID-19 cases in Ahmedabad rose by 130 on Tuesday, civic chief Vijay Nehra has hoped that the infection will be brought under control by May.
He appealed to people to strictly follow the lockdown guidelines to defeat the coronavirus.

“As we move forward, the confidence of our teams is slowly increasing as we can detect the maximum number of cases. We are collecting the maximum number of samples for testing and are thus achieving a high testing rate. We have put in place everything required for the treatment of COVID-19 cases,” Nehra said.
We can now say that if we get people’s support, we shall be able to bring the virus almost under total control by May, he said on Facebook Live.

“To achieve this, people will have to follow lockdown rules completely till May 3,” he said, adding that the synergy of discipline and organisational strength will help in defeating the virus.
The sharp rise in COVID-19 cases in Ahmedabad over the past few days was attributed by the municipal corporation to the active surveillance by health teams.
“More than 15,000 samples have been tested- 1,939 through passive surveillance and 13,145 via active surveillance-in the city so far and 5,500 people are currently under quarantine,” Nehra said.
He said the civic-run SVP Hospital in the city has successfully conducted Cesarean section (CS) operation on a 30-year-old pregnant coronavirus patient, which he said was the first such case in Gujarat and seventh in the country.
He said the newborn will be tested for coronavirus after 24 hours.
Listing various measures to help people, Nehra said the civic body and the state Health Department are taking steps to augment the number of beds in hospitals in Ahmedabad.

The number of beds in SVP Hospital has been increased from 500 to 1,000 starting Tuesday, to lessen the burden on the district civil hospital, he said.
He said 51 patients have been discharged so far from hospitals in Ahmedabad after their recovery from the COVID-19 disease.

“One of them who was discharged on Tuesday was suffering from several comorbidities like diabetes and hypertension, and was on ventilator support for ten days,” Nehra said.
He said the civic body has signed an MoU with a 5-star hotel to convert it into a COVID care centre for asymptomatic patients at the charges lower than the market rates, which will be fixed by the civic body.

Ahmed Patel questions criteria for sending Central teams to states, asks Shah to send one to Gujarat
Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel on Tuesday questioned the government on the criteria adopted for sending central teams to states over lockdown violations and asked Home Minister Amit Shah if he would send a team to Gujarat too because of rising cases of such breaches there.
Given that rising cases & lockdown violations were criteria for sending Central teams to states,I request Amitbhai to deploy similar teams to Gujarat

He said the central government should not adopt a selective approach in this regard and that such teams be sent to all states, including BJP-ruled states.
“Given that rising cases and lockdown violations were criteria for sending Central teams to states, I request Amitbhai to deploy similar teams to Gujarat,” he said on Twitter.
Gujarat is the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
“This exercise shouldn’t be limited to selective states, all affected states must benefit from constructive inputs of Central Government,” he said.
After the Home Ministry decided to send inter-ministerial central teams to states like West Bengal, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh, some state governments raised strong objections to the move.
West Bengal termed the action as one which was not in the spirit of federalism, with chief minister Mamata Banerjee raising strong objections in her letter to the prime minister.
“I urge both Honb’le Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji and Home Minister Amit Shah Ji to share the criterion used for this. Until then I am afraid, we would not be able to move ahead on this as without valid reasons this might not be consistent with the spirit of federalism,” she said.
11 migrants held for bid to reach Odisha on bicycles
Eleven migrant workers were arrested in Navsari district while they were heading from Surat to their native places in Odisha on bicycles during the coronavirus-enforced lockdown, police said on Tuesday.

The workers took the wrong route to reach Odisha, located around 1,500 km from Surat, and they were caught by Navsari police on Sunday when they were passing through National Highway No.48, which connects Gujarat to Mumbai, police inspector P P Brahmbhatt said.
They were arrested under IPC Sections 188 (disobedience to police order), 269, 270 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life).
They were later released on bail and sent back to the Pandesara area of Surat, the official said.
“These workers from Odisha were jobless for several weeks due to the lockdown. They were desperate to go back home as they had no money and were facing food shortages. They had planned to cover 1,500 km on bicycles, but lost their path and started cycling towards Mumbai via Navsari,” said Brahmbhatt.
They planned to reach Odisha in 15 days by covering around 100 km every day, another police officer said.
Left with no money, they were carrying dry poha (flattened rice flakes), which they planned to eat by adding water whenever they felt hungry during the journey, he added.
In the past few weeks, hundreds of migrant workers from Odisha and other parts of the country staged violent protests in Surat, demanding that they are sent back to their native places.
28,000 doctors to participate in Indian Medical Association’s protest on Wednesday
At least 28,000 doctors in Gujarat will join the Indian Medical Association’s call for a candlelight vigil on Wednesday, April 22 to protest against violence and discrimination faced by medical practitioners treating COVID-19 patients, an official said on Tuesday.
As many as 28,000 doctors from across the state will take part in a candlelight vigil at their respective places at 9 pm on April 22, secretary of the IMA’s Gujarat chapter Dr Kamlesh Saini said.
“The call was given by the IMA headquarters after several cases of violence and discrimination against doctors were reported across the country. In Chennai, locals even refused burial to a doctor who had died treating coronavirus patients. Many doctors are abused, threatened and denied entry to their residences because they are doing their duty,” Dr Saini said.
The IMA wants the Centre to pass a stringent Act to protect doctors and restore their dignity, he added.
If the government fails to give an assurance or bring an ordinance, doctors would observe Black Day on April 23, by wearing black ribbons on their arms, Dr Saini said.
