M K Stalin has resigned as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, marking a major political transition in the state following the results of the April 23 Assembly elections, party sources said on Tuesday.
The resignation letter has been forwarded to the office of Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, they added.

The development comes after the DMK’s electoral defeat, with the party winning 59 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, positioning it as the principal opposition force.
Meanwhile, the TVK, led by Vijay, emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, crossing the majority mark and altering the state’s political landscape.
The AIADMK secured 47 seats in the closely contested election.
Despite stepping down from the Chief Minister’s post, Stalin has asserted that the DMK will continue to function as a “robust opposition party”, signalling an active role in the new Assembly.
