CHENNAI, MAY 5
A politically charged atmosphere has gripped Tamil Nadu after actor-politician Vijay led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, but fell short of the 118-seat majority mark, pushing the state into a hung Assembly scenario.
With no party crossing the majority threshold, Tamil Nadu has entered a phase of high-stakes political negotiations and alliance realignment, where every seat is now crucial to government formation.

TVK has formally approached the Governor, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, staking claim to form the government and seeking a two-week window to demonstrate majority support on the floor of the House.
The development has intensified speculation over possible post-poll alliances, with attention shifting to smaller parties and independents whose support could tilt the balance of power.
‘Mandate for change,” says Congress
Reacting to the outcome, Girish Chodankar, Congress Tamil Nadu in-charge, said the verdict clearly reflected public demand for change.
“People have voted for change. Youth and women, in particular, have supported the TVK in large numbers. We respect the people’s verdict,” he said.
Chodankar confirmed that a detailed post-poll analysis has been submitted to the party’s central leadership, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and K C Venugopal.
“The next course of action in Tamil Nadu will be decided collectively by the leadership,” he added.
Signalling openness to evolving political equations, he further noted:
“Once the TVK elects its legislature party leader, they can approach us. No one should underestimate the TVK,” he cautioned.
Numbers game takes centre stage
With DMK securing 59 seats and AIADMK winning 47 seats, neither of the traditional Dravidian majors has reached a decisive position, making them potential influencers in post-poll alignments.
Political observers say the coming days will be crucial as independents, smaller parties, and cross-party negotiations are expected to play a decisive role in determining who forms the next government.
Waiting for the next move
As the political suspense deepens, all attention is now on Raj Bhavan and emerging alliance equations, which will ultimately decide whether TVK can convert its electoral surge into governance or whether a coalition arrangement reshapes Tamil Nadu’s political future.
