What happens when cutting-edge research from an IIT meets the global business network of GIFT City?
That question could soon acquire a practical answer as the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) and Global Chamber Ahmedabad GIFT City, part of the Global Chamber® network, join hands to build a bridge between laboratory breakthroughs, industry adoption and global markets.
The two institutions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on August 28, 2026, to establish a University–Industry–Global Ecosystem partnership aimed at accelerating the journey of IITGN research from the campus to real-world applications, market validation and international commercialisation.
At the heart of the partnership is a simple but consequential proposition: good research should not end at publication or remain confined to a laboratory — it should find the industry, investment and markets capable of taking it to scale.
The collaboration will seek to create pathways for global market access, industry partnerships, technology validation, investment, international technology incubation and cross-border scaling, while strengthening IITGN’s global innovation ecosystem.
From campus labs to global markets
For IITGN, the partnership provides an avenue to connect its research and deep-tech capabilities with companies, investors and decision-makers beyond India.
Global Chamber Ahmedabad GIFT City, drawing on its international network of CEOs, investors and policymakers, will facilitate global partnerships, market visibility and access to international business ecosystems for IITGN.
The partnership will also explore joint programmes to assist international technology companies entering India, including mechanisms for technology validation, certification and adaptation to Indian conditions.
At the same time, it could help Indian innovations find partners and markets overseas.
Highlighting the need to create such pathways, Prof Rajat Moona, Director, IIT Gandhinagar, said:
“For an institution like IIT Gandhinagar, it is important that our research and innovations find pathways beyond the campus. This collaboration opens up opportunities to connect our work with industry and global ecosystems and take it towards wider applications and impact.”
That shift — from research output to measurable impact — is increasingly becoming a critical test for academic institutions seeking to translate scientific discoveries into economic and societal value.
GIFT City as a two-way technology gateway
The partnership is not envisaged merely as a channel for exporting IITGN technologies.
It could also make GIFT City a gateway for global technologies and investments seeking an entry point into India.

This two-way orientation gives the MoU a wider ambition: Indian research going global and global innovation finding an Indian base.
The collaboration will explore opportunities for joint research, investment and cross-border scaling, while supporting IITGN’s international positioning and creating a stronger India-entry pipeline for international technology companies.
The missing link: Validation, adoption and scale
A promising laboratory innovation does not automatically become a successful product.
Between scientific discovery and commercial deployment lie several hurdles — technology validation, certification, adaptation, industry acceptance, investment and market access.
The new partnership seeks to address precisely these gaps.
Under the arrangement, IITGN will contribute its expertise in technology validation, deep-tech and innovation support, research and development, while Global Chamber Ahmedabad GIFT City will facilitate industry adoption, global partnerships, international technology incubation, and engagements in urban innovation and emerging technologies.
Prof Vimal Mishra, Dean, Research and Development, IIT Gandhinagar, said: “The collaboration will create opportunities to connect research and technology with industry and global partners, helping promising innovations move towards real-world applications.”
The objective is therefore not simply to create another academic-industry interaction, but to build an ecosystem in which technologies can be tested, validated, financed, adopted and scaled.
A cooling conversation with a deep-tech angle
The MoU signing was followed by a technical interaction focusing on sustainable and energy-efficient computing infrastructure, providing an early glimpse of the kind of technology conversations the partnership could facilitate.
Discussions examined advanced cooling technologies, including closed-loop water cooling, and their potential to reduce both energy and water consumption.
Participants also explored the integration of renewable energy solutions and discussed the potential of geothermal and other building-level sustainable cooling approaches.
The focus is particularly relevant as computing infrastructure and data-intensive technologies expand rapidly, creating an urgent need for solutions that can reduce their energy and water footprint.
A bridge with a global destination
The MoU was signed by Shanker Damodaran, Executive Director, Global Chamber Ahmedabad GIFT City, and Prof Vimal Mishra, Dean, Research and Development, IIT Gandhinagar, in the presence of Prof Rajat Moona, Director, IIT Gandhinagar.
The partnership brings together two complementary strengths: IITGN’s research, technology and innovation capabilities and Global Chamber Ahmedabad GIFT City’s international business network.
Its real test, however, will lie beyond the signing ceremony — in whether promising technologies move from campus to company, prototype to product and Gujarat to global markets.
If that bridge works as intended, GIFT City could become more than a financial and business hub: it could become a launchpad where Indian deep-tech meets global capital, industry and markets.
